Dynamically Mirroring Proxy
Akamai is introducing FreeFlow, a dynamic mirroring technology
that mirrors pages to servers closer to the source of demand.
Unlike similar proxies, like Janet's in the UK, the service
does not improve access speed to all sites, only to those sites
that pay a fee. Interestingly FreeFlow is Linux
based. Link found on LWN.
Tough mailing lists to get off, once you're on!
Of course Akamai can be easily defeated by lolo or pupule. And there are lots of lolos out there. (Get out your Hawaiian Dictionary).:-)
BTW, abcnews.com also posted a story on Akamai this afternoon.
They say they use a customized version of linux. Since linux is GPL'd, all derivate works are also GPL'd. Is there anyway we can prove it is or isn't a derivate work? I wanna see the source! ;)
If you say that, you must have never used the Janet Web Cache. I am forced to use it here at uni, and I can tell you without doubt it is the slowest possible way to access the net. I never knew a web cache could be SLOWER than not using one, but the Janet Cache is unuably slow, and if we didn't HAVE to use it here because Janet charges for all other access, believe me I would avoid it.
if you don't feel like registering, just use this account:
user: devnull2
pass: devnull2
it's a pretty good article. much more detailed than the abcnews.com story.
Don't use IIS. Or have crappy content.

We must circumvent this. The power of the Slashdot effect must never be challenged!
Muhahahahahahahaha!
Their customized version of linux is, in fact,
Red Hat 5.2. (My landlord works there; he
configures their servers.) It's "customized"
in the sense that they didn't select "Install everything."
The rub is that often slow or overloaded uplinks from sites, or site cache servers, can make it hard to tell where the real problem is. That's why it's very, very, important for you to get in touch with us if you think the service is too slow.
Check out our WWW site at wwwcache.ja.net for contact details.
Ta!

Hey! What happened to the title? I thought it was the "Slashdot effect killer"! C'mon! You gotta have fun with your titles...
