Slashdot Mirror

Dynamically Mirroring Proxy

Akamai is introducing FreeFlow, a dynamic mirroring technology that mirrors pages to servers closer to the source of demand. Unlike similar proxies, like Janet's in the UK, the service does not improve access speed to all sites, only to those sites that pay a fee. Interestingly FreeFlow is Linux based. Link found on LWN.

Their customized version of linux is, in fact,
Red Hat 5.2. (My landlord works there; he
    configures their servers.) It's "customized"
in the sense that they didn't select "Install everything."

OK, well, I help to run the JANET Web Cache Service... :-)

The rub is that often slow or overloaded uplinks from sites, or site cache servers, can make it hard to tell where the real problem is. That's why it's very, very, important for you to get in touch with us if you think the service is too slow.
