Couple of Dorks in Wired
drwiii was the first
to submit it and I guess I have to post it. Hemos and I have
our pictures in
the March issue of Wired (p45). We look like dorks, but when they
took that picture it was like 5 degrees out and had something like
a 25 degree wind chill. This is for the March issue they say as
they order us to remove our coats and risk frostbyte so that
we look timely. Eek.
I guess this means I should buy this issue.

holland lighthouse, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, near Holland, MI. Sorry about the crappy picture (altough it's not as crappy as the picture it is in reference to!)... I spent a lot of time there as a lad...
I'm sure the Holland chamber of commerce will appreciate us crashing their server just in order to satisfy our geographic curiousity!
most of that stuff happens up north (up brainerd way), though. usually older folks (40+) too; i haven't noticed it as much from the younger crowd. i think it's funny because i only live here, i didn't grow up here, so i pick it out really easily; most people don't even notice it. what you see more of is some of the minnesota-isms (both spoken and mannerisms) sans accent (at least from a wider range of people).

assuming thats the lower half that is... I live just outta chicago and we don't get too much snow but from what i've seen and heard, in michigan they get tons of snow cause they're on the other side of the lake (lake michigan, that is)

I've been really disappointed with our local weather here in Minnesota, Any temperature above 10 degrees is totally unacceptable, let alone 30 or 40...I want my 45 below with the minus 70 windchills, where your exposed skin flash freezes in like 30 seconds...oh well

except for those damn merkins with their farenheit scale.. I didn't parse the temperature as farenheit until my 3rd pass, because like 95% of the worlds population, I use CELCIUS.. damn yankees expecting us to assume farenheit when they're the only people in the world that still use that backwards scale
Getting married at the lighthouse? Farm out! Did you know that a little scale model Christmas tree ornament of the lighthouse in Holland is available. They are ceramic, red (duh), and about 1-1/2 in tall. They are available at finer curio shops everywhere. (part of a series of lighthouses) I got one when we were in Oregon last summer.

What a great town..except for the constant buzzing of jet skiis in summer. I come up there a few times a summer for sailing...wonder if I could pay a visit to the GeekHaus(tm) some time? :)
Gotta agree with you there.. I've lived everywhere, but I've lived in Fairbanks for the past 4 years....its gotten to like 60-70 below here....you do NOT want to go outside *grin*
Although it's quite amusing to throw some hot water out your front door....its all frozen before it hits the ground....=)

When you spit & it makes a crackling sound (as it freezes) before it hits the ground, it's about -40 C/F or 233 K / 414.6 R or colder.

How the heck can you have a wind chill that is warmer than the actual temperature?! Unless you meant a 25 below zero windchill.
I'm sure even geeks can pick up Wired on the rare occasion when it covers something relevant. Like, say, new short fiction from Neal "Snow Crash" Stephenson, or last month's article about Matt Groenig's "Futurama". Besides, I'm sure there's less of a stigma attached to being in Wired than buying it.
