More press for Gecko.
Landley writes "Here's an introductory article from developer.com about Gecko and NGLayout. Mentions Linux and Apache in passing, tries to comprehend "Open Source" but calls it "public domain" at least once, bit of speculation about the Netscape/AOL merger and future use of the technology... Not a lot new here, but worth a quick look anyway. "
Gecko still seems to be crashing on my box. Ah well, Officially
I want to make Slashdot work right with it- but really I just
want gtk themes *grin*.
I was confused on that point for a little bit as well. It got cleared up after I read the website a bit more.
Hidden Syntax
maybe developer.com is great, put oss != public domain necessarily...not at all really.
As for slashdot, I don't see that its necessary for this site to be serious journalism, do you?
When someone posts some lameass story about Microsoft, there usually are about 300 coments. But Geeko is not important enought, so we got only 10 posters today. Which makes me conclude that, Slashdot is full of people who just want to rage at microsoft, talk about how Linux is a slavation of all our problems or flame someone else.

The initial sentences of this article seemed to convey that the big accomplishes of OSS would be Linux, an OS, Apache, a web server, and then Mozilla, which is merely a web browser. The most powerful web browser on earth is still a web browser, why aren't any OSS ftp programs major accomplishments? It's only an application to view files and access the more hyped part of the "net". An OSS office suite or game engine would be much more impressive than a web browser.. come on.. I'm excited about Mozilla but it's not on a scale equal to Apache or Linux.
I remember that Vinod, author of the "Halloween-documents" - commented that support from the Open Source community didn't seem to be that great... Half a year later - how successful has this development model been in the Mozilla case?
"Tries to comprehend"? I like developer.com, do they really deserve an attack like that? I guess slashdot is equivalent to an editorial-only section of a real newspaper, but I liked the article..
Don't forget that web browsers are the best "clients" for database applications like Slashdot and these "enterprise" applications we keep hearing about. Forget the failure of Active X, Java Applets and Dynamic HTML -- Classic HTML and forms are here to stay, at least until Microsoft finds a way to embrace and extend...
This release will mean a lot for a lot of people. OSS is slowly taking over. Imagine the quality after the world's users get six or seven months to pour over the source code and fix the bugs that make it crash!
æeee!
I was just doing a comparison of how the page looked in Netscape vs. IE (i'm really bored). And in IE I noticed some text over that blue border on the left. It was collored white so it didn't show up anywhere else, in netscape the text fell completely within the white background. Here it is:
"The preeminent online programmers journal and resource for software developers, programmers, web builders and information technology professionals working on software development, web building, programming and need programmers news and updates. "
Kinda interesting.
