Of course, the issue isn't a Linux issue -- it's a Windows issue. Yet the press, and the protest organizers, seem to have done their best to characterize the protests as having to do with Linux alone. This actually hurts the effort, since it's perceived as having been spawned by a bunch of weirdos who use a strange, unfathomable OS. But for some reason, many of the organizers -- especially the ones in the Bay Area -- fail to see any benefit in involving users of alternative COMMERCIAL OSes. It's a shame.
I'm working in LA, and am about to venture out to try and find the event in Irvine, CA. We'll see if there are any users of Be, NetWare, etc. there.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Do you really believe that people will switch to another OS just because they don't like the company? You think my mostly PC-illiterate family is going to want to learn Linux just because Word crashes every 10 minutes? Just getting sound to work for your soundcard under linux is a pain. You have to do things in it which you simply should not have to do.
Im not anti microsoft or anti a particular OS. I use what works. Sure, in a perfect world your OS would be free like linux, set it self up for all your hardware automatically and be easy to use like win95, robust and crash free like linux, and all commercial programs and games would mainly be made for that OS. I've got to say that i believe that there is no one superior OS. I'd use linux if i could have all the software i need for it, but the fact is, there isn't and there probably won't be a Photoshop port to linux for a long time. And before you reply, no, the gimp is not as good as photoshop. It has good functions, and good power, but the interface isn't great and it's no PS. Hell, I should be on a Mac to use Photoshop to its best abilities. On the OS note, Bill Gates isn't evil - he is merely maximizing his lead by any means available. I can't say that if I was in his position I would not do some of the same things. I doubt any of you could, either. Regardless of how badly his operating system works *some* of the time, it is user friendly, it is what the plebian masses are used to, and he's a very smart man - albeit a ruthless one. Would the "linux nazis" here posit a future in which linux has taken Bill Gate's place as the new OS nazi? Who's to say he wouldn't squash a new OS coming out because it was better, eh? Anyway, that's just my two bits.

Yes, that's true. However, I believe that the people that are going to MS for refunds are doing so because they can't get anywhere with the OEMs..
Maybe, just maybe, MS will listen to these people, take their names and the vendors that sold the computers, then communicate with the vendors about refunding them, who will in turn refund the consumers. It's unlikely, but that's probably the only way that people will get their money back..
I certainly hope that MS will help organize a way for consumers to return Windows and get a refund (e.g. set up a channel for MS to communicate with OEMs to handle this), but I definitely have doubts.
I just got back from the Foster City, Calif. site. I'd guess there we're about 100 people all told.
By the time I arrived, the press conference on the 4th floor of the attached parking structure was breaking up. Folks were being herded down to the front entrance, where we gathered across the street. It seemed like there was a fair amount of press. I saw local CBS and ABC affiliates, and many, many more folks taking pictures. There was one police car parked outside the building entrance, and another skulking up in the parking structure, with lots of building security milling about.
Most folks were wearing VAResearch t-shirts, with some Free-BSD, MKLinux and me in my BeOS shirt (which drew some mild jeers;). Lots of protest signs, and both plastic and stuffed Tuxs' were in prominent display.
Bottom line? No one appeared to be walking out with a refund check. Imagine that. A Microsoft "official" referred potential refundees to hie thee back to the OEM to honor the EULA.

Unless you purchased a shrink-wrapped copy of Windows from a reseller like CompUSA (i.e. a copy WITHOUT a computer), MS has no involvement in the refund.
