agreed. take this for example... let's say i build a bomb, leave it in my garage, and a friend comes over and picks it up in his car. later, he blows something up using it and lots of people are injured. am i not partially responsible?
people that do shit like this claiming "academic interest" are full of it. at the end of the day, you don't build someting like this unless you intend on using it.

KidsClick! was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System, as a logical step in addressing concerns about the role of public libraries in guiding their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites.
RCLS's first effort to address this need was to compile a single page of search input boxes from the handful of existing databases of selected or screened sites. This page has undergone several revisions, and is still being maintained at http://www.rcls.org/ksearch.htm
In the Summer of 1997, RCLS wrote an Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant application that proposed the idea of creating a search engine/web guide for children. We were dissatisfied with the quality, scope, functionality, size, and attention to maintenance of the handful of existing databases.
why couldn't the iridium (or similar) satellites been used to create a free satellite radio network?

i used to work at an isp where dsl was no where in the near future for our customers, only because of the practices of the local phone company (read baby bell). anyway... you may also want to check in what is sometimes refered to as a BANE circuit (i believe) as this is another name for the alarm circuits.
one last thing to keep in mind: if the phone company has a load coil on that pair that you plan on using, your dreams have just been killed. sorry.
either way, some new equipment is starting to surface which brings some new ideas to the table for lines like this such as hdsl2 (search on google, you'll like it;) ) basically hdsl over a single pair, with increased distances.
i have to say tho, the idea of moving into the old alarm company's building is a good one, too bad there weren't any around really where we were looking to do this.
Well I agree that this was well written, I think the "clear" part should be reconsidered. Please keep in mind that if your goal is to extend beyond the normal readers of (and by this I mean teachers, school admins, etc) I think a more concentrated effort should be placed on demystifying some of the computer like terms outside of the poster's comments. explain what slashdot is, clarify a "poster", and dumb down what a BBS is for some of the others out there. Speaking from experience, it's quite easy to scare non-technical people away when you start to use acronyms that they don't understand, and I think the general consensus here is that this message needs to be spread outside of the slashdot and technical community, so make it easier for them to digest.
Other than that, an excellent start. Kudos everyone!

This reminds me of a plethora of calls that my help desk has been getting regarding compaq computers. It seems that the modem drivers that are in the proprietary version of Windows that is shipped with these machines do NOT support V.90 technology completely. One Customer was on Compaqs help line for over a month with no help in sight. Then one night he mistyped his Trouble Ticket # and found himself talking to a tech support person in KS, USA. This tech was able to connect to my customers machine, root around in the bowels of the Windows system and VOILA! this customer is now able to connect at higher connection speeds without dropping off or disconnecting prematurely. Now my question is since this is an OBVIOUS problem with compaq/windows, why doesn't compaq try to fix these problems before shipping out these machines, or at least contact the customers to verify an/ or correct this problem so it doesn't tie up ISP's help desks who are NOT going to root around in.vxd files on n00bies boxes. OH WAIT!!! I'm assuming that not everyone wants to have a system that needs constant hand-holding and support updates.... silly me!

Even though I feel that this discussion is beneath the minds of most/. readers, I am proud as a parent and/. reader at the majority of the responses to this posting. Yeah, I'm kinda concerned that my 2 year old stops, drops, and tunes into the teletubbies whenever they happen to appear on the screen, but hey, I grew up with PBS programming, and I would rather have my daughter watch some mindless, passive show that may have some social applications hidden in their midst than a violent badly drawn animated waste of time, when I do happen to have the television on. I seem to be blessed however, since my daughter would rather sit on my lap while I'm programming or work on her Macintosh 6100 while dad is trying to work out networking issues, than watch TV.( My hope of hopes is to get her to be the first kid in her kindergarten class to reprogram the schools PC's to run Linux...:^)) Anyway... television is pointless at best and a waste of time that could otherwise be spent reading Either books or a monitor. Let's all remember folks Television is entertainment. Lets keep the learning flowing, and not try to limit the aspects of social growth with censorship and predjudice... Once again.. good to see that the same people I go to for help with my computer system seem to agree with this philosophy....THANK YOU ALL

Yeah ok ok I know LA's a little more stressed out, but what's next a pager for everytime there is a "good" episode of springer, or there is an upset in the WWWF (getting ready for flames after posting that last one) isn't there enough of a problem with TOOO much useless information floating around out there, without having to worry about someone who would think it would be quicker to rush home to view the show, or worse yet, actually try to intercept it? I dunno It just makes me believe in the whole De-evolutionary principle and the "dumbing" of the US. in general.
