Microscopic, natural art.
jackcp writes "This is a site that has all kinds of
pictures taken by scanning electron microscopes.
Beautiful pictures, at that." Obviously the images have
been doctored by photoshop or something, but they are quite
nice. I love seeing artists finding new sources for their
work, and some of those images are quite stunning. I really
wish they had higher resolution versions though- the best art is better when
it becomes my background image *grin*.

DJs arent artists, they're crooks
I equate it with photography, which I think takes a lot of artistic talent.
there have been several ideas that I would
like to invest in although I don't have
any real money to do so.
but if all slashdot subscribers were to chip
in a buck for promising linux friendly companies
we could more entrepenurial startups catering

i'm suprised we didn't get any jokes pertaining to why "microscopic natural art pictures of bill gate's... uh.. *insert genatilia here*"...

as far as I know, a guy I knew started this whole craze of calling images like this art over 10 years ago at FSU... he's quite a wealthy guy now. (his pictures were even put on ties and such!)
These images are bland compared to the stuff he showed me.
Somehow -- don't ask me why I think this -- but I seriously doubt that Hitachi's R&D division would have doctored images from electron microscopes up on their website. They might have false coloring applied, but hell, even NASA does that. I'm quite sure such an activity hardly constitutes doctoring.
Those crazy folks at Hitachi...

Rob, you should probably start keeping your editorials to yourself. The one about not reading books anymore and only reading web pages also ranks up there as one of your worst.
Am I totally wrong to assume that this is based on the same idea as those magic eye pictures?
there's an artist i read about in ArtByte named Giles Revell. he scans specimens in with an electron microscope from different angles and then composites the images to give them a depth and dimension. quite impressive.

Something always struck me as odd about people who find things (i.e. they don't create it) and call it art.

DJs do the mixing. DJs do the scratching. DJs do whatever else it is they do (I know, some of my friends are DJs). The final piece of work _is_ something they've created.
Compare this to the microscope guy. He grabs an image off a SEM and calls it art.

I stand corrected

...is this what Slashdot is all about? "News for Nerds. Stuff that matters" is, I admit, fairly all-encompassing, but c'mon, we can't be all the newsgroups in one.
Is it me, or is that one picture of the Gold Moon look like an atomic blast or the like? What do you think?
Now THAT looks like a doctored picture...
