HP expected to restructure
Dima Barsky writes "There is a rumour that Hewlett-Packard is going to
split into two companies

According to several stories, they may be planning a new division
aimed at internet-related hardware.

Are they going to split back into HP and Apollo?
Back when HP and Apollo merged, I said "you can't tie two anchors together and make a boat". I was partially wrong then, but it looks like I'm right now.
The next Cmdr Taco duplicate will be ready soon, but subscribers can beat the rush and see it early!
Will it be a hardware/software splitt ? or more processor / other split ? Is it related to IA64 ?
(Hp machines are great I mean both HPPA and Intel powered, I hope the hardware will continue to stay that cool). Now if HP ux could become more SMP friendly this really would be great (I think the OS is mostly responsible for SMP features, not Applications).
none Yet.
Here is a story from PC Week.
What do you mean about HP-UX not being SMP friendly?? HP-UX 11.00 runs up to 16 Way SMP on V-Class machines I know for sure. I know it will also run at least 4 way on K-Class servers..
I absolutely agree, long before there were HP pc's they made some of the best looking O'scopes, et cetera. They were expensive but at least they looked it.
Unfortunately, they're going to do it the wrong way 'round. (You'd think they'd welcome a chance to get away from having people confuse their computers with Packard Bells)
I see even classic Slashdot is now pretty much unusable on dial up anymore.
So, are the two new companies going to be called Hewlett, and Packard?

Wonder what they will do to overall stock value?
Wonder if that Rick Beluzo that took over SGI knew
this ahead of time?
fly on the wall
The skinny according to a report on Quicken.com is that the company will split along the lines of the Test and Measurement division, and the rest of the company (servers, pc, perphrials, etc.) This sucks for me if it is true (we haven't even heard from inside what the real skinny is yet.) I am in the Test and Measurement Division. Guess it is time to tune up the ol' resume, just in case.
Well, I'd like to see one become Packard-Hewlett and have them rename HPUX...
