Linus & Maddog on panel with MS and DH Brown
Anonymous Coward writes "
Linus and maddog will be on a panel, along with a Microsoft guy (Jim Ewel) and someone from DH Brown (Tony Iams).
This will be in Atlanta at the AIIM '99 conference.
" The actual date will be April 14, 9-10 AM.
What is DHBrown?
So, what's this document technology blah blah mean? Is it just putting word processed files on a network?
The article claims that Linux doesn't have "..the ability to run simultaneously on many processors in a single computer and to keep a log of what the computer has done."
This is obviously bs. I'd like to send them some good info and encourage others to do the same. Maybe if they see that enough people noticed their mistake, they'll correct it.
Preach on brother Beavis!
Jim Ewel has made some seriously boneheaded statements (just like Ed Muth). Here's one from USA Today. "I kind of look at Linux and open source as the resurgence of socialism as opposed to capitalism. People who are providing good products and good value for lucre are being attacked as kind of horrible." The full article is here. A resurgence of socialism? Good products for good value? Uh huh. If you'd like to provide some constructive criticism, his email address is jime@microsoft.com.
Nah, all the facts you seek are available at their website, http://www.dhbrown.com/dhbrown/linux.html . Of course, the details may only be obtained for a reasonable fee.

"Linux currently lacks some of the features demanded by corporations that intend to run their entire business on computers. Among them are the ability to run simultaneously on many processors in a single computer and to keep a log of what the computer has done."
WTF?
I hope Mircosoft reimbursed them well for marring their professional reputation among those in the know.
There ought to be a way to sue these guys.

Jim Ewel is the marketing director of SQL Server 7.0. He might be now a marketing director for Win2K.
I think Tony Iams was involved in the Linux report from D.H. Brown.
Anyone else have more info?

Hope Linus do the "right thing" (tm) and kick those ms-wusses in the nads.
I would LOVE to go see this. Linus is a very witty and quick guy, who can argue against FUD very easily. I would love to see the FUD-slinging the M$ ppl try to throw at him, and watch him shoot it down before it even gets a chance to land. Should be cool...anyone gonna be there to report on it, etc?

A study by D. H. Brown was used as a source for John Kirch's NT Server 4.0 vs. Unix Page. I don't know where they get their funding, so I can't say for sure whether they are objective or not, but this is at least one in their favor.

Actually, apart from Ewel's comments, the article was pretty good. They did a good summary of the history of Linux, giving credit to both RMS and Linus for their respective shares of the work. (I thought RMS started the FSF earlier than 1984, but that's the only mistake I found).

The real meaning of the GNU GPL:
"The Source will be with you... Always."
Whoops.
Anyways, is there any coverage on-line for this? I want to listen in. How about a Real Audio feed?
Ohhhh they should turn it into a tag team wrestling match!

The AIIM organizers were gracious enough to gift the Atlanta Linux Enthusiasts a booth on the show floor. We will be answering questions and promoting Linux, the Atlanta Linux Showcase, and Linux International. If you're planning to come to the keynote panel, drop by and say hello!

More like a resugence of opposition to a dictatorship. Micros~1 = FUD. That is a given.
It is finding out who works for Micros~1 that
makes it difficult to seperate FUD from reality.

I hated the article too, in all its incarnations around the Internet, but.... What I did notice was the last thing said was positive. OK, it was only couple of sentances but it was still positive. This is something that is never done in a piece published with a Micros~1 blessing. IMHO. Someone is probably in trouble for that but the fact is that it leaves a better taste in the mouth then if it was left out. Looks like D.H. Brown is going on the pole with DataQuest...

No kidding... This article echos claims that Linux doesn't support SMP or syslog.
It also says that Linux is less suitable for general business purposes than any of the commercial UNIXes or even NT, without giving much of any details on what criteria were used to make that determination.
How much do you want to bet that DHBrown is one of those "independant" computer institutes that is funded entirely by a certain redmond based company.

I'll bet you as much money as you'd care to lose.
Got any other unsubstantiated rumors you'd like to bet on?

this is more a linuxtoday, or lwn.net thing, but it would be nice to get a report from a real tech perspective, and not just from the mainstream media. so if anyone's going, it would be nice to get some detail.
i think in some ways it's nice to see, especially in light of esr and bruce parens little war of words. it will be a nice example of parens "hydra" marketing approach - both linus and john representing linux (and free software) instead of a single esr.
and no offense to esr, but i think linus and john will make a better impression. as opposed to the rms and esr approach to marketing (weird outfits, and outrageous statements), this pair will present a very toned down yet persuasive message for people to consider. not so much "in your face" as "in your head."
