Linus & Maddog on panel with MS and DH Brown

Linus and maddog will be on a panel, along with a Microsoft guy (Jim Ewel) and someone from DH Brown (Tony Iams).
This will be in Atlanta at the AIIM '99 conference.

A study by D. H. Brown was used as a source for John Kirch's NT Server 4.0 vs. Unix Page. I don't know where they get their funding, so I can't say for sure whether they are objective or not, but this is at least one in their favor.

Actually, apart from Ewel's comments, the article was pretty good. They did a good summary of the history of Linux, giving credit to both RMS and Linus for their respective shares of the work. (I thought RMS started the FSF earlier than 1984, but that's the only mistake I found).

More like a resugence of opposition to a dictatorship. Micros~1 = FUD. That is a given.
It is finding out who works for Micros~1 that
makes it difficult to seperate FUD from reality.

I hated the article too, in all its incarnations around the Internet, but.... What I did notice was the last thing said was positive. OK, it was only couple of sentances but it was still positive. This is something that is never done in a piece published with a Micros~1 blessing. IMHO. Someone is probably in trouble for that but the fact is that it leaves a better taste in the mouth then if it was left out. Looks like D.H. Brown is going on the pole with DataQuest...

No kidding... This article echos claims that Linux doesn't support SMP or syslog.
It also says that Linux is less suitable for general business purposes than any of the commercial UNIXes or even NT, without giving much of any details on what criteria were used to make that determination.
How much do you want to bet that DHBrown is one of those "independant" computer institutes that is funded entirely by a certain redmond based company.

this is more a linuxtoday, or lwn.net thing, but it would be nice to get a report from a real tech perspective, and not just from the mainstream media. so if anyone's going, it would be nice to get some detail.
i think in some ways it's nice to see, especially in light of esr and bruce parens little war of words. it will be a nice example of parens "hydra" marketing approach - both linus and john representing linux (and free software) instead of a single esr.
and no offense to esr, but i think linus and john will make a better impression. as opposed to the rms and esr approach to marketing (weird outfits, and outrageous statements), this pair will present a very toned down yet persuasive message for people to consider. not so much "in your face" as "in your head."
