Geek Complex without Power

The Geek Complex is without power today following an electrical cable cut inadvertently made by the phone company following some work in the area. This means Rob and Jeff are unable to post stories, respond to e-mail, etc. It also explains my sudden usurping of power on the site. We're hoping that everything gets fixed soon.

Spock: "Captain, Dr. McCoy is correct. If the site is left unattended for very long, the Internet itself could be at risk".

Kirk: "We need an alternative now. Scotty, would it be possible to restore power to auxilary control before the bridge?"

Scotty: "Aye Capt'n, I could do that, but you wouldn't be able to get there."

Kirk: "I'll worry about that problem, just get auxilary control online now. Kirk to Ensign Cowboy Neal. Report to auxilary control and take tactical command. I'll remain in strategic command here until the bridge is repaird."

Cowboy Neal: "Aye aye Captain, auxilary control is now online."

They may have, I tore a water line out from the corporation (fitting) on a water main once. The city didn't know it was there since it had been abandoned for years.

Any idea how much water comes out of a 3/4" hole @ 800 PSI? :P

We also got a 2" gas line that wasn't found by the locators.

But yea, usually it's either not called in for locating, or it's located properly and people get lazy. I saw a guy take out a thousand pair telephone cable that way (back in the days when a thousand pair was a major line). Just minutes before hitting the thing, he told me that he could "feel the cable with his DitchWitch". He felt it alright, right in the wallet.

His bonding company wouldn't pay for the damage since it had been located properly.

Apparently the local power company had a problem across town from /. and only has two repair crews out today. Phones, says Hemos, "are cutting in and out." They promise to post - phone - e-mail the second everything's working again.

Can you imagine the Screaming and Torment(tm) going on at the Complex right now? There's Rob in the corner, racked with withdrawl symptoms; Hemos gibbering in the dark about "internet" and "SlashDot". Probably something resembling a level of Quake I....

And I agree, CB Neal is doing a FINE job of article selection today.
