Whatever happened to JABBER ?

Another member of clan AC wonders: "Whatever happened to JABBER, The Open Source ICQ replacement, such a good idea, why did it never reach fruition?"

    dont know of it could you show what it looked like

    or who was invilved maybe a better question
    was it part of FSF ?

      Check out www.jabber.org. It's supposed to allow a way to communicate with people via a number of protocols (AIM, ICQ, etc) without you having to keep an AIM client open, an ICQ client open, an IRC client open.. etc..

    Well, the source is still there along with more or less proof of concept server & client code. The stuff compiled and worked fine under a number of different unix like distros. Anyway, I'm also working on putting together a functional client version for the MacOS. Unfortunately for me I keep running into time problems, mainly I don't have enough.

    Anyway, It isn't _dead_, but it isn't very visible either.

    See www.jabber.org. The last month as been fairly quite, but we've been working behind the scenes on alot of things, inluding security, web based clients, etc..etc..

    You'll find that we're awefully quite, at least untill we have exactly what we're looking for, something to blow the doors off of everything. We really don't want to release something when it's not quite there yet, and have to play catchup later. Hopefully soon, things will all fall into place, and we can finally say goodbye to ICQ and AOL clients.. (BUT STILL be able to COMMUNICATE with them, the BEST part..)

    Hey all... Jabber is still moving along and just about ready to break into the big-leage.

    I've been insanely busy with normal life this past month, but at the same time preparing to take Jabber to the next level. Look for a few announcements and a big boom in development over the next month or two.

    On a side note, I have successfully already used any Jabber client to communicate to ICQ and AIM users transparently, the code will be cleaned up and available soon.
