SuSE Labs Formed
SuSE has formed SuSE Labs, an
effort to contribute to free software projects. The press release
(which can be mangled by Babelfish for all you non-German speakers)
mentions projects like XFree86, KDE, and ISDN4Linux which SuSE has already
worked on, and says that they will be working on them in the future, as
well as other projects like ALSA. This seems pretty cool - I know
Jaroslav (the ALSA guy) was hired by SuSE awhile ago.
We heard that 3.3.4 at the end of June
and 4.0 alpha will be out in July.
Where? Can we see 4.0 by the end of
this year? I mean 20th century?
I belive it's something more like
"suus-eh"
But what do I know?
Another thing - According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless.
Well that doesn't help those who don't speak German.
The person asking the question was clearly an English speaker, your answer doesn't help at all.
Read the XFree86 web site (www.xfree86.org) and you can read their release plans for 4.0 alphas with new alpha versions every few months afterwards. No real date on the final 4.0 though.
FYI, the 20th century ends Dec. 31, 2000, not 1999.
Huh.
Maybe rpm-based distro's aren't dead after all.
:P
Nah, seriously, good for them.
Along with a $29.95 Best Buy price, SuSE - pronunciation here may be worth a look for the office types around this place. At least they don't start you off with that lame win95/98 look alike desktop.
How's the English in the 6.1 manual?
How many dollars is RH loosing because of the likes of Mandrake? I would say quite a lot. As far as RH being more well-known, that is only in the US. I think Suse actually has more distribution internationally. So there would be little gain in allowing others to ripoff their dist.
...not really, but it is just RedHat with a (tiny) bit of tweaking.
anyone know when Debian-2.2 will be out?
Additionally, does anyone know if *debs are dependant upon other debs or upon files (like RPMs). The reason I ask is I like to do alot from source and rpm realizes that the files I install are really there. There is no RPM installed as I did it from source, but RPM is cool as long as lib*.so (whatever) exists. My experience with *debs on the other hand is that they seem to ignore already installed files and wish to install packages which include files already present on my machine.
(eg., I've been messing around with apt/dpkg on a redhat machine to familiarize myself with debian. I tried to install a newer version of the Gimp, which I already knew I had all of the dependencies for, but still apt wanted me to download 14+ packages.)
Am I going to have this kind of a struggle each time I have installed something from source and wish to upgrade some other package?
How hard is it to make deb files? anyone got a howto or a script i can take a look at?
thanks alot
-matt
It's pronounced Kasier SuSE ;)
Mr. Simon, if you read this, Please release us a working version of your mlx driver. I'm so grateful for the help SuSE is giving our community. PM2 is a cheap board (30 bucks) and your efforts in providing a fully working opengl hardware acceleartion to PM2 users is much appericated. We would really like to see a working version out in the CVS. (which is stagnated with old version that do not work with 90% of the pm2's out there). Please help
Thank you.
Grateful PM2 user
Looks like they're following RedHat's footsteps.
Thank god, at least ONE of the bigger distros is finally throwing their weight behind ALSA. Maybe now I'll finally be able to install it successfully. :) It would sure be nice to have full-duplex on my AWE-64 (no thanks to the closed sound system crippleware).
I asked RedHat support several times if they were ever going to ship ALSA drivers instead of the Closed Sound System drivers, and never got a response at all.

And if you dan't have sax or SuSE:
It is GPLed. Thanks SuSE!

Ok How do you pronounce SUSE? I've heard it pronounced like suzy or suce?(rhymes with moose) and ten other ways. Any one have Linus pronouncing it?
Linux is only free if your time has no value. Windows is only free if you threaten to use Linux.
>This could be intended to just silence the dumb accusations about SuSE
>only ripping off linux.
gee, it didn't seem to work for redhat. they spent over two million dollars on development, release gobs of free software, and for some reason are acused of being the microsoft of linux.
i wish suse luck. i hope all the linux distributors follow companies like suse, redhat, and even va systems and contribute back to the linux community.

The best thing SuSE could do for free software development would be to free YaST, their proprietary setup tool.
It would also help solve the problem of SuSE being less well known than Red Hat - there are many meta-distributions such as Mandrake or Yellow Dog based on Red Hat Linux, but none based on SuSE, because of the YaST licence.

Lets just hope they don't have the problems that RHAD have had with trouble in the ranks. I only hope that they are going to do something useful and not just use it for publicity (which RedHat did to a certain extent, although they have produced some good stuff).
Hey,
*
I appreciated the fact you posted the article too.

I thought ALSA was going to be included in a future kernel version?
If that is the case, distro's wouldn't really need to ship it, unless for `just in case` situations.
*shrug*

Sorry if you feel that I shouldn't have made that post, I just did it since I myself prefer to read the translations that people provide in the comments rather than to go to Bablefish myself. Since nobody had done that yet I did it myself.
Also, about the format in my first post. Maybe someone can explain what is wrong here, it had the same HTML tags as the second post, and in preview it looked fine, but when I submitted it the tags were removed. I had to post it without preview in order for the tags to stay in place. Is there a bug in the scripts?
Same thing happening with this post, the tags dissapear when I use preview.

Still, it's nice to see them getting into the game. It's a little weird how they seem to be less known than Red Hat, since they're a heckuva lot bigger. We have three SuSE boxes at work and several clients' webservers from us are also running SuSE on dual-Pentia boxes. Pretty cool stuff.

Everyone wants to be Ethelred. Even I want to be Ethelred.
Nuremburg, 6 July 1999 -- The SuSE Holding AG, one of the world's leading Linux distributors, is now making a significant contribution to Linux development. Together in various European locations or connected via the Internet, SuSE programmers are helping many open source projects out.
"The group will carry current, long-term and technologically important Linux projects, independent of short- or medium-term company goals while standing on a firm commercial basis," said Roland Dyroff, chairman of SuSE, about the goals of the SuSE Labs. "As we are bound to the basic principles of open source software, we will release results -- naturally including source code -- for further development and free use. Thus, we are taking on an active product responsibility for Linux."
Previously, SuSE was already active in various projects, like the Linux kernel, glibc, XFree86(TM), KDE and ISDN4Linux. These efforts will now be intensified and will be expanded to include new projects like ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) and USB (Universal Serial Bus).
The SuSE Labs will thereby combine Linux know-how with an until recently unique pool, which opens a new level of quality in Linux support. "Through the SuSE Labs, we are in a position to offer so-called Level 3 support to commercial customers. This guarantees customers effective assistance within a defined timeframe, even at the source code level," explained Tilman Mueller-Gerbes, Vice President of SuSE Holding AG. And furthermore, "next to the SuSE Partner Program, the local service representatives and the support centres, the SuSE Labs will form the third important pillar of our service package. As a leading Linux dealer, SuSE creates the foundation for using Linux in mission-critical applications."

Sorry if the English got a little hackneyed, but it's far better than the Babelfish version...

The manual is well written but as a newbie who had little trouble setting up RedHat 5.1 and 6.0 I must say I found the manual almost unuseable. It frequently has screens and menus in the manual that are not found in the install process and it assumes a knowledge of Linux that I don't possess. Also I might point out the hardware database is much smaller than that in RedHat 6. I had problems getting X running on my old monitor.
