The biggest hole in the OSS concept was "tons of people will be reading our code and thus be able to fix our bugs and develop enhancements". In a couple of decades of engineering, programming, and project management, I don't recall anyone saying "hey, I'll spend my non-existent free time doing a thorough code review before tweaking this code to do what I want".
I also prefer the Trackpoint (aka "eraser head"). Probably because I had a thinkpad before ever having a mouse and, as you mentioned, being loath to move my hand on and off the keyboard (or on and off the mouse).
I also had a Toshiba Satellite for home use for many years... not only a Trackpoint, but similar build quality, documentation and support.
