  1. Using it in production environment on KDE 4.1 Alpha 1 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am using KDE 4 (latest builds) at home on my laptop and desktop. Yeah, production environment.

    Q. But it's an unstable alpha right?

    A. Right, a lot of the KDE4 applications crash. Never fear, for any buggy KDE4 app I simply run the equivalent KDE3 version instead.

    Q. But this uses a lot of memory to have kde3,qt3,kde4 and qt4 loaded at same time right?

    A. Right, but it still manages to use under 500MB and run smoothly with compositing enabled thanks to the new code and efficient toolkits (qt3 and qt4).

    Q. So sure, they keep rewriting stuff and a lot of the applications are unstable. However, this doesn't mean you can't start using it now. It's a really nice desktop environment. Enjoy it now :).

    A. This must be hard to setup though right? Having KDE3 one run instead if KDE4 one is buggy.

Right again but most distros shipping a KDE4 version (Opensuse, Ubuntu) do all that hard work for you. They still use the KDE3 version for anything remotely unstable. So you shouldn't get any crashes using it. If you do though, it's not hard to install the earlier version.

Perfect timing for all these companies who say they want to become environmentally friendly. Same companies that go through reams of paper every day.If there's cost savings involved as well this is a no-brainer.

One thing to note is that all these schools that take up linux use KDE as environment of choice. I've heard of a dozen schools and countries that use linux in the classroom now and every single one is KDE. Why not gnome? Why not something else?

I know KDE has Kiosk and some Brazilian educational software, but is that it? I think KDE tries to sell itself as an educational platform as well. But.. why not Gnome? Gnome has huge potential to be in classrooms if they make an educational suite. This would also boost linux adoption. So why not?

There is a huge take up of linux in schools now. I heard about some very large install base but forgot where. Heck, there are even doing it here in Melbourne, Australia: http://freesoftnews.com/archives/7184 (13th April, 2008)! Problem with those estimates is they they extrapolate linearly. I think the growth is exponentially increasing -- especially with this hunk of rubbish called vista.

Surely Intel's chips have failed cores sometimes too. What do they do with theirs? Just chuck them out? They should be reselling their failed quad-cores. Interesting: What happens if they don't have enough failed quad-cores to meet demand of tri-cores? Would they purposely disable a core that I could re-enable myself just to keep up with demand?

No,it's just if you use a medieval measurement system, you get larger sizes than if you use metric. So the large/medium one is actually larger if you live in a country (USA) that uses imperial. Metric people buy the product based on what the size is called, not what the actual size is (they are all the same for them). Perhaps this is why all these fast food places have no 'small' and jump straight to medium and large serving sizes?
