Didn't Sony once have a product that would have made this fairly simple. You had a little device and when a song came on the radio you liked you pressed a button. Later on you could go to their site or using a program they had find out what the song was you were listening to etc... does anyone know if this still exists?
Hmmm sounds like Microsoft and yet the masses still except them as a buisness leader. Makes you wonder how long before they start stealing rights away from us. Or are they already?
If I remember right these proteins are released in intervals and build up when they hit a level a reset condition occurs were the proteins are re-assimilated. In theory one could create conditions were these proteins are released faster or slower to regain clock sync.
I'm confused and maybe someone can clarify why this particular article seems to be so behind in this new technology as they already have shows on the discovery channel that explain this to the point a ten year old can understand the goings on? Or is it simply the fact they understand how to control the timekeeping piece of it?
if the last 3 digits of the email are.de the redirect the user to a page that says something to the effect.
Due to the stringent confusing laws in Germany this site cannot afford the potential of being held liable for spam in Germany therefore you must use another e-mail account like those you can get for free at yahoo.com or yada yada.
Seems you would at least be doing your part to make sure no one is using your site to flood someone elses mailbox.
The only show on fox worth watching any more is the Simpsons. Even the Simpsons makes fun of the stupid stuff fox does. They took off dark angel and I quit watching anything on fox. I want them to die a painful death. Seeing that firefly is on the way out doesn't supprise me it is probably a ploy to increase ratings. I won't be watching.
There is also a cost associated with getting this setup and being able to administer it with billing etc. For some it may be to much of a hassle given the expected return. Am I going to invest 5-6k for people to focus on this and get it worked out so that 5 people can pay me maybe an extra 30-60 bucks a month. I wouldn't, maybe you would?
Right now all the servers I administer are at 25MB. I find this is more than large enough for anyone who is actually working. File sharing needs to happen over a file server that is what a file server is for. Mail servers are for communicating and there are safeguards like limiting file size that need to be in place to prevent someone from being an id10t and bringing the entire server down because he thought it would be funny to send some video of a monkey scratching his ass to everyone in the company.
I used to have all internal mail unlimited in size until the sales team at one company decided it would be a good medium for sending files back and forth and they began sending and broadcasting a 100MB+ Powerpoint presentation back and forth. Get about 5 revisions going and have them all be broadcasted to 30 people and watch a small mail server go down.
I would say it is widely known that the wordviewer exists. You may be unaware that many people are using alternate operating systems who have no access to the Word Viewer I.E. Macintosh, Linux, Solaris, HPUX, SGI, OS/2, and Digital Unix not to mention have you ever tried to read documents in pocket word for the pocket pc or palm, not pretty.
And before you tell me that wv is there for Linux or you can convert on the Macintosh. Isn't the point of the document to be portable across these systems without hassle of figuring out how to translate it so it can be viewed on your device? Thus acrobat is born and is it freer for the end user you betcha because one can ensure that the reading experience across platforms is as close to the original as possible without having to publish a different document for every platform that they would like to deliver their content to.
So while you are correct the word viewer is available to those who have already paid their Microsoft Tax the argument that it's half true that you don't have to pay money to view a Microsoft Word document is not. The exception might be using wine to launch the word viewer which only solves the problem on one platform and I won't even go into the problems with getting it setup so it actually works right without installing MS windows so the appropriate DLLs could be loaded so the word viewer will even work.
That is kind of funny because the line feeds are ^M just like what the acrobat distiller does. I would say PDF is freer than word however, because you don't have to pay money to view the document and since the purpose of this document is to be read then this particular format is best suited to enable that viewing across platforms without additional costs for the reader while maintaining the original format of the document.
I would also say anyone using PDF's for the security of them not being easily modifiable is running on assumptions that the people they are sending the files to are to stupid to figure out how to modify them to their hearts content.
Let me try one more time to make it clearer to you why I feel surf control was correct in their assessment of the site and maybe in the process convince you that the comment you made was not only uncalled for but wrong. The site in question libertyforum.com contains comments, which can be considered hate speech. The site lacks the ability or simply does not want to censor these comments. This is their choice and is perfectly fine. Surf control has this to say, "www.libertyforum.org is in our list and categorized as Hate Speech." Now should I choose to use them and rely on their judgment to deny access to controversial materials on the net to my employees that is my choice. Now you may claim that is censorship but as the employer it is my right to deny access to whatever I choose on the internet. Otherwise the internet becomes a haven for undesirable content much like it already has. It becomes more of a distraction than a tool in the. Then it is a liability and becomes extinct in the office space. No one is claiming that the site should be taken off the net or that they shouldn't be allowed to discuss even the most outlandish topics but seeing as how surf control blocks potentially offensive sites not individual pages of content I think they did the right thing here. As for the article you read about destructive speech did you skip the first and last paragraph and go straight to the legislating aspects of hate speech. The article I posted was there to help define the stance I was taking, not roll you out on a tangent about the legalese of hate speech and get you going on censorship and our rights as Americans eroding away. It's also a prime example of your arguments strategy. Bring into question the intelligence of your opponent then discount any comments with the same question of intelligence it is a passive aggressive way of dealing with opposing views. Which if you read the article is used as an example of hate speech. I try and play it down with you and allow you to strengthen your argument but in the end your argument is I'm smart and your not. I'm beginning to find it regressive to participate in that portion of the discussion and it is starting to overshadow the main point of the sites classification. So if you would like to continue the discussion on why they are classified as containing hate speech then I'm willing. If you are still stuck on questioning my comprehension then I am done as there is no point continuing with this any further.
I kind of figured it was a waste of my time pointing out specifics for you. Even when it is in front of your face you deny it or excuse it. Bottom line the site was blocked for hate speech after looking it contains what is considered hate speech end of story. I'm sure you can argue yourself in circles but when it comes down to it your wrong. Sorry, I'm not the one who hopped on slashdot and decided to insult someone without at least checking things out first. I'm sorry you have yet to learn the difference between comprehending and deriving meaning. Just because the meaning I derived is different that what you did doesn't have anything to do with anyone's lack of comprehension. What it does show however is intolerance on your part going directly to attacking my comprehension rather than taking a look at the facts. This shows you have a bias towards allowing hate speech. The question now is, are you a hate filled racist or simply someone who is so paranoid about loss of free speech that you will try and protect it even if it means you are standing up for hate filled racists?
I'm going to go ahead and post you an example of what one would consider hate speech even though I feel it's probably wasting my time. First I'll define hate speech for you so you will be on the same page here.
Hate speech can generally be defined as words so outrageous that they would be considered fighting words. I have a source here from UCB so you know I'm not just blowing smoke at you.
I would consider the phrase on the site and I quote here "Nuke the Raghead" rather inflammatory to the point of fighting. Let me clarify here that I am a White Anglo American so you don't form some undo stereotype.
http://www.libertyforum.org/showflat.php?Cat=&Bo ar d=news_lf&Number=241803&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1&t= 0#Post241803
or how about some others you might be able to argue for but are still considered "fighting words"
"The world's biggest racists are the Jews" direct quote from the site. "And whatever else they are, the Jews are not non-achievers" another directly from the site. There are more but I think this is enough to get you past the first page with the two people talking back and forth to each other in jest which I can only assume was what you were talking about.
Why you would deny this language is used throughout this site is beyond me unless you have an agenda. I'm done responding to you until you can see that this site contains hate speech I feel like I'm spinning my wheels with some kid who doesn't know the difference between comprehension and what it means to derive meaning from a reading. There is a huge difference between understanding and being able to come to an understanding.
For clarification I find the term used to describe the site within reason for the fact there is no way for the site to be moderated or the moderators choose not remove this type of speech. My personal bias is I find the site devoid of any real meaning. Many of the postings present views that are socially deviant and while provocative don't offer any new perspectives on anything but do offer inflammatory views on various topics that can and will spark uneducated discussions that can have and will resort to name calling and other more elevated forums of hate speech.
Irony is when you question my comprehension of a site and you haven't read it. It's obvious you have something going here above and beyond simply insulting me it doesn't take more than a scan of the first page to see exactly what I'm talking about. I tried to reason with you about it and you aren't hearing it the only one who can help your self-proclaimed ignorance is you. I can only suggest you read both the site and a dictionary. What you do of course is up to you.
There was plenty there that falls under the direct definition. People like you make me fel like slashdot is no longer a geek site and is to be no and forever more run by those who resort to name calling and insults to make them feel better about the points they are trying to make. I'm sorry your experience in racism, hate speech or your personal agenda precludes you from understanding what you read. The site in question can in fact be classified as hate speech and if you represent the interests here I suggest you take them to court for libel. Slashdot is able to avoid this type of label by providing moderation for user posts that would rank those deemed inappropriate or racist. I wouldn't think I would have to explain the intricacies of this given your steadfast position on the topic but I guess even the holy have their flaws.
Comprehension? I read the article and the replies did you go that far or did you stop after the FAQ. There are others and I still stand behind the statement this site should be blocked. I'm all about social devience for intelectual gain but I think this site is extremist and doesn't constitue a grass roots movement on the grounds that his site has been classified as a site containing hate speech. I also find it a bit judgemental that you would question my comprehension given you missed the racial epithets on the very page I posted.
Damb this is just someone trying to pander the masses to his cause. His intentions may not be to be a hate site but look at the link it seems that it is. And of course because he is labeled as such they are all just looking to crush his free speech. Their are tons of examples of full blown and borderline hate speech if you look through the site. He got what he deserved and if people are using the product that blocked his site I say good for them at least they got this one right.
Cliff I have to ask do you ever look through these before posting or are you so inundated with submissions that this crud slips through sometimes.
Hmr since when does someone voicing their personal opinion make them a drek. Esp. when they do it using their real name in a public forum opening themselves up to possible criticism from their peers. I know I should have done it anonymously or using a fake name and answered with a very insightful one sentence question. Followed by another put down in the form of a question.
You are right in that no one forces me to answer the questions. I'm not one that generally does but I can give you my personal take. It is in my nature to help people who need it if I can and sometimes even when I can't I try. This is just who I am can't change that as much as I would like to sometimes. Something that makes me not ever want to help anyone again is when I see questions from people who's idea of helping themselves is asking someone else for the answer. Your probably extremely guilty of it or you wouldn't be retorting my statements in such a lame manner.
In practice, How many different queries should a fellow reasonably run, searching through the first 50 results and not finding anything relevant, before giving up and trying the next option?
Don't bust my cods because you haven't any common sense man. Obviously there is no mathematical formula for this but a rule of thumb would be as many as it takes not to ask stupid questions.
How is this for things that don't belong on ask slashdot. My wife and I are scanning in a family photo album how do we make things go faster is there a hardware/software solution. But look cliff just posted that.
I personally think there should be a bit more stringent rules on what makes it onto ask slashdot just due to the increase volume of crap that shows up there were people don't even respond to it because they are so disgusted it is there to begin with.
Now were does all this come from check the tagline. "News for Nerds Stuff that Matters". Some of us still believe this is what slashdot is about us nerds who find lcd more exciting than ice cream, those of us who look at fractals and ponder our very existence. Not about helping people who don't know how to use google. Not about helping people learn how to use scanners. Not about teaching the lame to walk. It's about bleeding edge tech, about current tech events, and about LINUX. This site is not about you asking me how to get a multiscan printer to work under linux on your laptop, there are thousands of lugs will mailing lists to answer that for you. It isn't about telling you were the best price is on memory for an old Toshiba laptop with proprietary sockets. Quick google searches or pricewatch will handle this. But sure ask why we think php has an edge over perl for web based application programming. Ask will I ever use calculus in real life. These kinds of questions which pole the group for personal growth are one thing. Asking slashdot to fix you life because your to lazy or just plain don't know how to use a search engine are another.
I guess when I used the term "and find others" I assumed it was being read by people who understand that the reason it is called the web is because pages on one site link to another which link to another and another etc. Some sites might even link back to the site from which you started on and move on to different sites from there. Using this concept when I say "if the only resource you know is ask slashdot" "spend a bit more time with your favorite search engine" "and find others" I was referring to resources again the whole concept of a web going there. Using search engines find resources other than ask slashdot I guess is the way everyone will understand it.
My take on it is this the real geeks in here have been put upon and forced to do the dirty work of others for years with little to no recognition of our true talents. Then we come to our community as others have put it to relax and find reasons to be excited again. Then when we get here some lamer (for lack of a better word) has come up with the question of what geek options are our there for x. It's like someone asking me to do his or her dirty work in my time of leisure. This is especially irritating when I search up the exact question on google and it is in the top ten results with discussion groups tied directly to it already.
Now I'm all for being an open community but people really need to think before they ask what nerds might consider stupid questions. Especially when they don't check the resources that are out there before posting to ask slashdot. It is even worse when someone is looking for complicated answers to problems were it is obvious they don't even understand their own question.
The next one is the obvious company posting to ask slashdot for competitive analysis information. Their are people out there who study sociology for a reason. So they can perform the work of gathering information for group studies. Not so you can post a question asking us to tell you who all your competitors are and how we feel they rank to your product.
Now as for what resources obviously they are specific to the application so there is no single solution to this question. The rule of thumb is to start off small. Local user groups, specific interest groups, then as you encounter more and more "I don't knows", it might be an appropriate question for a larger community like slashdot.
The point being here is that if the only resource you know is ask slashdot then you really need to spend a bit more time with your favorite search engine and find others before you even think about posting to ask slashdot.
If this ever becomes the minority view then I will have to see if I can find myself a new news site. And slashdot can their tagline to "The Newbies Site for News and Information From Around the Web" instead of "News For Nerds Stuff That Matters".
Why is everyone acting like such a simpleton about this? They need to fix the equipment that these otherwise generally used products would interfere with. They can come up with policies and procedures all day and it won't fix the fact that obviously this equipment needs to be replaced and it needs to be done now! I would support a momentary ban on electrical devices while the refitted the planes with new equipment. But the possible blanket ban on everything is getting a bit ridiculous because what it comes to now is any fruit lop with a battery and wire can f-up the planes electronic fail safes now how smart is it to keep the problem but try and eliminate anything we know might exploit it. Anyone thinking of ways to allow laptop usage while keeping the true problem isn't thinking at all.
Why fix the problem when you can get rid of whatever exploits the problem. Now how long before someone builds a device that looks like a pack of cigartes to scramble up these systems on purpose.
I could be wrong but I took the parent of this as a joke concerning the postings of late regarding the video game console industry. In these posts the console manufacturers sell their consoles "at a loss". I could be wrong but I chuckled when I read it thinking of the lameness of "selling at a loss".
There are such things as hardware 3d accelerator cards that will accelerate certain rendering functions in hardware. In high end shops you will find a lot of these type cards. Many SGIs weren't so good at their jobs because of the fabulous mips processor it was the video card they put in them that made them do such fabulous real time stuff. The Macintosh had them for a short period of time for their quick draw and quick draw 3d features but I doubt one was used in this setup. So this has a very high impact on the job at hand and not having the facts at the finger tips in the report takes away from it's credibility. Obviously you fail to see this and all I can say is march on lemming the cliff is just over there.
Did you happen to read that the dual proc mac was also running an distributed.net client and serving pages for a tier 1 p0rn site.
Seriously looks a bit biases to me esp with the way they neglect to mention such important factors as the video cards used in each. I know one of the machines comes with a nice ELSA video card.
That being said I wouldn't take that article to seriously for nothing else than the testing and reporting are kind of lacking.

Boy boy boy. Are you trolling or being serious.
