    because they know they're vaguely supposed to do a run multiple times, and maybe average the results or something.

    Taking the minimum of multiple runs is often better than the average.

    That's what programmers really should know about statistics. And if you don't think this applies to you, then take both average and minimum for your usual number of runs. Repeat 10 times and check which number is more stable (that is, has the smaller variance).

    I don't see why privilege separation should help. There is no need to run that spambot as root.

    I'd also be concerned about the other half. Whatever is attached up there in space will drift into space quickly, and whatever isn't might get smashed by the upper half of the tether.

    Please note that you can have vi-style keybindings in emacs, type M-x viper-mode. I use this for years now and this is the reason why I never learned vim in depth.

    Also, I think it is crucial to have an easy-to-reach ESC key. I use CapsLock, which is pretty useless otherwise. Hell, I even have remapped the return key recently, two positions right to the "l", so I don't have to stretch my little finger further (replacing the german "ä" key).

    To those learning vim (or viper) right now for coding: do not underestimate the power of "." (repeat last action). After renaming a variable with "cw" (change word) you can move your cursor and apply the same change again elsewhere. You can still do so after starting a search. This gives a very leightweight search&replace.

    Freedom is all I hear. Did you notice that most of us are denying the Chinese the freedom to filter their internet traffic?
