How is a 70" picture that's just as sharp as your 20" TV not 'extreme detail'? It's just that the detail is displayed on a bigger area. Pixels per inch is lower, but the same information is conveyed.
I mean, you'd still see all the whores and prinkles.
I think the problem isn't availability, or lack thereof.
BASIC was THE language to code in back then. It was the only language I knew of and it was already on the computer.
What we need is one language (of the many, many available and easy-to-program-in languages) emerging as the de facto standard programming language for kids (or anyone that wants to learn how to program).
BTW, I know of one language that is available on (almost) all computers: JavaScript. Just fire up your favorite browser.
