  1. How Metallica found so many users on napster. on Product Placement · · Score: 3

There are more than one napster server, there seems to be like 100 or so. And they are not linked like irc servers.
I connected one of my computers to napster then the other, I connected to napster over 100 times trying to copy all my mp3's from one to the other and I think I was on a diffrent server every time because of diffrent people in the chatrooms. I never did find my other user.
That number of users you see is only whats connected to that server. Same goses for the number of gigs online.
Connect and reconnect a few times, watch the numbers go up and down for each server.

  2. More ram? on 50-Dollar Hackable "WebSurfer" · · Score: 1

These things would be realy cool if they had alittle more ram. Say 32 megs or more then they would make realy cool cheep webservers.
Another use I can think for them would be home automation controlers. They would be really nice in the home entertaiment center controling the lights using x10 or directly threw the paralle port using a few transistors and relays.
    Any ways nice little boxes.
One last thought, with those little 180Mhz processors do they have enough power to decompress MP3's?

  3. Another one jumps on the free software wave. on Get QNX For Free · · Score: 1

Sounds alot like BeOS to me with the way the file system is on top of linux or windows file systems and stuff.

The real time side of its nice. Dose it come with a compiler? I couldn't find any real specs on the site. If it dose I will finaly have an OS for my robotics and automation stuff. Timeing under linux is nuts.

Well it seems like I hit the site before the /. effect it was nice and fast so I can't wait to get my cd and give it a try.

  4. MPEG's the MP3's of the future. on 400 Gigabits Per Square Inch · · Score: 1

I think people will have no problems filling a storage device of that size with movies and music videos and stuff. Most videos I download today are around 50 megs for like 4 min and it looks like crap.
If people start storeing dvd's on there HD like they do with audio cd's today it won't take long to fill a few TB.

I just got a rage 128 based AIW 128 now If I could only get the video card working in X with out all my fonts being screwed.
And what about 3d support for this chip under linux?
Right now I'm stuck using windows 98 because I want to beable to play quake 3.

  7. Re:Why bother wasting time? on Simple Comprehensive Config Tools? · · Score: 3

The biggest problem with all these configureing programs is that you the user are limited to what the programmers have built in. Also these programs make a mess of the files. I gave mandrake a try a while back and for me it was the hardest thing to use because the config program didn't have anything in it for configureing ip_masq and more that one nic. The rc files are a mess and imposible to trace.

I started out using slackware and I found most of the config files were easy to edit manualy and any special setups wasn't that hard to configure.

One of the biggest problems I have when I sit down at a windows 9x machine to fix something for a friend is that I have no way of knowing what the box is trying to do or what has been done. And then theres the rebooting *shudder*.

What we need is a stadard layout for config files. That are both easy to read by humans and programs alike.

  8. Something else will pop up on Universities Begin to Ban Napster · · Score: 1

If they ban it something will aways pop up to replace it. The only way to stop it would be to ban file shareing(web, ftp, etc...) all together.

  10. ADSL has changed my life. on High Speed Net Access Defining College Life · · Score: 1

I just got Sympatico warp here in Newfoundland Canada. I got a warp 3 which is 1024kbps down and 512kbps up(some of my friends say is 1024).
The biggest change has been being connected 24/7. I can wake up in the moring and go online and at lunch and then for 2 hours after school and then 3-4 hours before I go to bed. No time limites, no disconnecting/connecting. Because of this I tend to keep staying up at night later and later and find my self sleeping in and falling asleep in class.
The + side of it is being able to listen to Shoutcast and real audio and video any/all the time. I have also found my self watching very little TV.
And to stay on topic, since ADSL has come to my town, the town has turned into one big dorm. :)
