    A lot of people talk about 'boy bands'.. Just because there isn't a word for 'guys that look gay' (actually it's more like guys that are too pretty, almost like a girl) it doesn't mean people don't talk about it. Also, if you are talking about the 'pros and cons of guys that look gay' you are probably talking about something else, like homophobia and stuff like that. There is a look of talk about that too.

    ('schadenfreude' was addressed on other posts)

    It just seems like somebody wanting to get their name in lights for doing background work.



    The linux kernel is the background work. You don't interact directly with it, you use the shells, and the rest of the GNU tools.


    If someone changed my kernel, I wouldn't notice, because I just use bash and gcc and the rest of the GNU tools.



    I still don't call it 'gnu/linux' tho.. (and if it is a different kernel, I ask 'does it have a bash?')

    Well, reading the article (not the link on unixreview.com, but the article on slashdot), you can see that they are still calling it only 'linux' on the title ("Caldera's Almost-Linux Skips The Linux Kernel"), event tho it doesn't have linux. I can imagine how pissed off the people at the FSF are getting.

    I'm beginning to see RMS's point.

    I desagree.

    Sure, if I'm searching form something like 'how to setup my dvd drive on linux' I want a HOWTO (and I go to yahoo for that), but for more obscure things (like maybe 'how to setup my mpeg decoder card on linux') the newsgroup and mailing list archives are very useful.

    That's one of the main features of google for me.

    I'd recommend Debian.

    It doesn't have a nice graficall interface (not until you instal it anyway), but it's really cool to use the shell and all the command line stuff. You really learn.
    Since you have a separate computer to try linux on, you don't need it to be 'productive' right away. Once you get X and a window manager working, you are ready to do anything with linux (and replace NT for good).

    True. This whole story is very nice, but nobody mentions what version of the mozilla code they used for Netcape 6.1

    I remember the problem with 6.0 was that they used some milestone, o an early version wich sucked.

    Actually I like easy. I wish linux were easier. The problem is that after I learn how to use something with the UI, I want to go to the shell to make things faster.

    On the topic of comparisons:

    I met rms about a month ago, on a LUG meeting. He said that if he ever 'retired' from the fsf for whatever reason, they had a very good VP to continue with the fundation. So, some questions to get an idea of how 'the succesor' is like:

    What do you think about free software? 'free software vs. open source'? Do you ever think about the future? Are you obsessed (in a good way) with things like changing the names of the LUGs and distributions to 'GNU Linux', or asking people to use savannah instead of sourceforge? Do you like Linus?

    anyone who's set up a modern Linux distro (Mandrake in particular) on supported hardware would find nothing too new in XP.

    Why would anyone who has used mandrake (or any other linux) care about windows xp? If you are alredy out of windows hell, why would you want to go back?

    We also alredy know that windows is easy to install. Thats the whole deal with windows. it's easy.

    I tried to login, but I got a 'wrong password' error on users.pl. I entered the passwod again, and I got this error from users.pl:

    You've reached the maximum number of times you can access users.pl: 123 accesses over 4 hours.

    I waited 2 minutes (maybe it's doing some werid average calculation), and I got that error again (the number of accesses changed to 144, then 148, etc).

    Of course people that run linux will spend more on linux, because they use linux (not windows).

    Being a windows and linux user myself, I _should_ be spending more money on windows, because I have to buy the software I use (eudora, X server, etc), but I don't. And linux I just download, and it's not illegal.

    It's about the money, but it's also because it's more confortable to download the cd and burn it without having to go to some store with salesmen.

    For me it actually felt the opposite of y2k.. With y2k all the media was "it's the end of the wold!! we were right, those damn computers are evil!!!", and I was "no big deal, just add some bytes".

    With red code, I was 'microsoft is going down!! yeah!', but I didn't see much 'media inpact' (who won the 'predict the headlines' contest).

    Nothing happened, but this time I was dissapointed. ;)

    No, it's not. Akira was cutting edge because it (as someone else put it) 'blew our scooby-doo-minds away', with all the gratuitous violence. Sure, the bood is nice, but it's all it has. The story is boring, and very difficult to understand without the background knowledge from the manga.

    And I don't mind a bad storyline on a normal anime, because there is always babes with big breasts. But no big breasts on Akira.. They are all 'chinese'.

    But an Athlon can merrily perform all the same functions, if not a bit more!

    Sure, they can have their little encrypted communications, and develop their misiles with an athlon, but DVD technology will give them access to something even worse: illegal DVD copies!! (wich I'm sure they are alredy producing anyway). We can't allow that.

    Remember: When you buy a Play Station 2, you are buying COMUNISM !!!

    No.
    First, I don't mean to be an ass, but there should be a '4th (or 2nd) world'. I'm on a 3rd world country, and I have 5 computers on my home. And we are not 'drug lords' or anything.. I'm just a geek.

    That said, the most inportant thing in our society (by that I mean the society where I live) is freedom, and knowledge. The only way to 'get out' is by learning, and doing something important (that or corruption). I know a computer will not give food to people, but knowledge is the most important tool this people could have.

    Interesting fact: before ~1995, the programers here were _very_ incompetent. There was no (good) commercial software being produced here, and all the the attempts were just lame. All that change after the arrival of the internet to every home. seriously

    I haven't because I don't want to bother upgrading my whole installation.... or worry about any potential conflicts

    I had 2 issues: the modules didn't load correctly (this is actually very serious), the solution was to 'apt-get install modutils'.
    The second was the the masquerade settings, I just upgraded to iptables (had to read a couple of howtos and stuff). I think there is a module for ipchains support on 2.4

    Overall, my life is better with 2.4.2

    Van gogh is boring. What about a software that 'looks' at all my pr0n, and categorizes it?
    Or maybe a program that looks at pictures of people, and generates pictures of those people having sex.. (like Xena and Scully; Taco will like that one)

    Geocities used to do this like 5 years ago. They would give a free '@geocities.com' pop3 mail, and all mails had an ad on them, like

    [a small image of the sponsor]</center>

    on the top. They stoped doing it a long time ago too.
