Actually, 'Mobile' phone is what they were called BEFORE the 'cell' phone was invented and popularized. I believe that in most of the rest of the English-speaking world they never updated to 'cell' phone, but just kept calling them 'mobile' phones. People that call them 'mobile' phones today are still living in pre-cell phone days. And calling them 'wireless' phones just causes confusion with 'cordless' phones.

I say call them what they are, 'cell' phones. Then when 'satellite' phones become popular, we can call them 'satellite' phones and people will know the difference!!!!

  7. This is why I don't use Sprint! on The Death of the "Cell Phone" · · Score: 3, Informative

I see that they have even brainwashed their own techs. The term 'cell' was strictly a geographic division with auto switching between sites, and the fact that Sprint tried to convince the public that they supplied something totally different when they didn't really turned me off to them.

Sprint didn't really have anything new to sell, so they made up the myth that they had something different than cell phones which was just 'smoke and mirrors'. Then when they divided the city up into 'supercells' that could not talk to each other without incurring additional fees that was just the cake on the icing!(sic)

If the PCS was actually the first digital phone, they should just have marketed 'the first digital cell phone' instead of trying to change the name of the device. (PCS - Personal Communication System) That just added more confusion to an already confused consumer base, and actually slowed the growth of the industry for some time.

Oddly enough, all of the 'mobile phone' towers are still legally called 'cell site towers', even Sprint's. And by the way, the hexagonal cells were not real, they were just for educational purposes. They were actually random shaped as the terrain and available tower locations required.

  8. The real reason for HD-DVD and BluRay on Why HD-DVD and Blu-ray Are DOA · · Score: 2, Insightful

What you must remember, the only reason that we are even talking about these new formats is because the MPAA wanted "enforceable" DRM built into the video media. The DVD format, while it can support HD video of 720p, the MPAA will not allow it, because of the lack of enforceable DRM.
The only reason they developed the new formats to support the HD video was to convince the users they needed to have the new DRM enabled systems.
    A few notes:
The early computer BluRay drives will not play the BluRay movies.
Both formats may "disable" your player if it "thinks" the disk may not be "original".
The player firmware can be automatically upgraded whenever you insert a disk.(this could cause some severe issues with compatibility).
With the increased data density on the media, it will be more prone to physical damage.
The apparent increase in picture quality is not worth the increase in costs of player or media.
If HD was really that much of an improvement, release the restrictions on the original DVD format, and spread the movie across multiple disks!

I'm not only hoping that, I also believe that will be the case.

The current DVD format is all I need, and if it wasn't for the MPAA imposed restrictions, they would be doing 720P instead of 480.

Both new formats were concocted mainly to introduce new copy protections that they could not re-engineer into the existing DVD format, both of which will DISABLE the device if it THINKS the disk is not a real original. This will require an expensive repair to re-enable the device! And every time they manage to 'upgrade' the protection scheme, the disks released with that scheme enabled will flash your device with new firmware to enable that scheme on your device. That may also crash or disable some devices if it misreads your old firmware, or if you turn it off during the flash not aware of what is happening.

We may buy a PS3 for the gaming aspect, but we will NOT be buying an HD standalone of either type, or any movie disks of either type.
