Just being born with a large family can help, lots of connections (most jobs I've gotten has been through knowing people), help when things go bad and such. The family doesn't have to be rich but it helps if they're not too poor.
How does that stop the nation with the largest military force from starting wars?. History has shown whenever a nation can clobber anyone else, that's what they do. Seems to me that the only thing that has slowed down wars is when nations can destroy each other.
I recently replaced my modem. The new one (a USRobotics) supports V.92 which claims 56K down and 48K (or 31.2K with a V.90 server) up with a note that FCC regulations limit it to 53.3 down with a disclaimer about lines and support. I get 26.4-28.8 connections.
Thanks for the explanation, I should have remembered the British phone system. Here in Canada long distance is a consideration if you're not in a major metro area and it is expensive ($0.27 base) with most calling cards and such going through compression which screws up dial-up.
If you live somewhere in the west where your only option is dial-up, it is going to be slower. Here currently CONNECT 28800/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS and it is probably now 26.4
I'm stuck on 26.4-28.8 connections due to location. My son plays quite a few games on-line. As I'm his gateway I monitor the amount of traffic and often he is barely using 300 b/s. Minecraft is one example he plays a lot.
There can be reasons for short restrictions such as natural disasters, disasters where the reasoning for the restriction is fairly obvious. At that many jurisdictions can conscript in the case of a disaster.
Seems the airline industry was started by governments investing in warplanes during a couple of world wars. At that before WWI the airline industry was dead due to patents.
My mistake, it was the Quebec Act of 1774 that dispensed with the test oath which upset many of the American colonists. The Quebec Act also legalized the Roman Catholic church in Canada which also upset many American colonists.
Good point, the Royal Proclamation of 1763 also gave full rights to the newly conquered French North Americans which quite upset quite a few of the colonists as the French were Roman Catholic who had lost many rights in the Revolution of 1688 and the resulting Bill of Rights of 1689. Catholics were not allowed to bear arms, serve in the civil service or become King and here was the tyrant giving them rights. Washington also smarted from being defeated by the French colonists.
And when the King wanted to stop and treat the natives with equality, the American colonists revolted as they wanted the land. With many of the founding fathers being land speculators they were well motivated to convince the common person that the revolution was over taxes (taxes that were used to defend the colonists against the natives who did not like being pushed out of their land) and when they realized they were a minority they went on a terror campaign against there neighbours.
American prisons use torture (long term solitary confinement) to force the issue and some States such as Arizona do have laws requiring every able bodied prisoner to work with wages of 10 to 50 cents an hour. Googling "American prison labour" shows much horrible stuff, perhaps not as bad as China but the big difference is America pretends to be free as they get less free constantly whereas China does not claim to be free and things are generally improving over there.
Fir trees, neither true Firs (Abies) nor Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga IIRC) need fire to open their cones. What Douglas Fir needs is fire to open up the forest as they're not shade tolerant. Most (all?) true firs are shade tolerant. Jack Pine and to a lesser extend some of the other pines do need fire to open their cones and at least in the BC interior massive amounts of fuel are building up due to the Pine Beetle, which does seem to be related to climate warming as the winters are no longer cold enough to control the Pine Beetle. Of interest is that Vancouver Island seems to have had island wide fires every thousand or so years judging by the Douglas Fir forests that existed until we cut them down.
Are you working outside (or exposed to outside temperatures)? My brother (a glacier) used to go to Prince George to work outside at minus 40 because of the bonuses. Perhaps bonuses for being exposed to temperatures that'll kill you in a short time have gone away to be replaced by bonuses for the executive who lowered wages.
When we voted out Social Credit, they joined the Provincial Liberal party, when we voted out the Progressive Conservatives, they got replaced by even nuttier politicians who eventually teamed up with the remaining PCs and are now in charge with 38% of the vote. When we replaced the Federal Liberals with the NDP, the NDP first took out the Libertarian parts of their platform then the Socialist parts so they could be more like the Liberals. It's hard to get rid of politicians, vote them out and they come back under different colours.
It's been proven that increasing the cost of energy causes people to buy more energy efficient things, cars with better mileage, light bulbs that use less power for unit of light, efficient refrigerators, natural gas heaters instead of oil fired furnaces, better insulated housing etc There, I can site an imaginary proof as well.
Canola: also not a weed and Roundup Ready canola is a Monsanto product. Monsanto isn't suing people over them having Roundup-resistant weeds. That's not in Monsanto's best interest because they'd have to argue, in court, that genes from their GMO crops are jumping species--what a weapon to give the anti-GMOers.
A weed is just a plant out of place, any plant can be a weed. If you aren't growing Canola and your field is full of glyphosate resistant Canola, you're not going to be happy.

Mountains, trees and rain make satellite impractical here.
wget is your friend. I can upload Firefox in about 6 hours but what is a killer is Mercurial which really doesn't like dial-up
I'm 50 klicks outside of Vancouver and have a sucky connection. Need a quality hardware modem to connect at close to 28.8. No cell coverage either.

As long as the subscribers aren't faced with long distance charges to connect with the other ISP.

How many farm worlds did it take to support Trantor?
Yea, the American colonists did not like the idea of a slave using habeus corpus as much as they went on about rights.

Canada currently has a government that 62% of those who voted voted against. To consider our current government represents Canadians is wrong

America probably has more prison labour then China. Those private prison companies need to make money with their guaranteed prison population.
