  1. The cable industry our friend on Cable Companies Despise PVRs · · Score: 4, Insightful

If you love your PVR, the cable industry is not your friend.

I don't have a PVR, but I can't recall a time when the cable industry has ever been my friend. $45 for exteneded basic cable services, and what do you get? 70 channels of ads. I can't stand watching TV! Slowly but surely commercial length is increasing while show time is decreasing. 1/3 of a 30 minute segment is commercials. Sure the PVR would fix that but even before this article everyone knew that someone was going to cry foul. The cable industry is just like the rest of the content industries, as soon as the content control is in our hands they bring in the lawsuits because they don't want to change.

Screw it! I'm about to move and I've already decided that I'm not going to pay the money every month to have junk piped to my home. /rant

Unfortunatly Non-Commercial stations are somewhat few. NPR (national public radio) is non-commercial of course. There are a couple of local ones here where I live but I haven't found too many in other locations.

We aren't a democracy we are a constitutional republic. Which is why we don't go and vote on the laws ourselves, rather we elect people to go vote on the laws for us.

I'll probably get flamed for saying this but the group think on Slashdot is not a majority of people. The majority of people in this country don't care about file sharing, they don't care about their computers coming with software, most likely the masses don't want it to come without it because then they have to go through the pain of learning how to install something to even make it usable, its not a tax, its a convienence. Its not that people are stupid its that not everyone is interested in computers (I know that comes a huge shock).

Not all people, in fact most people are not uneducated unwashed masses, they are very educated and very opinionated about the things that matter to them. I have a lot more faith in our system after the past election, for example in Texas the challenger for governer out-spent the incumbent by nearly 3x and he still lost. Several other governer's races and senate races were the same way. It doesn't always matter how much money the corporations spend on a candidate, they still do not get to vote.

That doesn't mean that we don't need to reform our campaigns, and we don't need to get rid of the soft money contributions, but we can't just sit waiting for congress to do something about it. We have to vote. Vote against the people that the corps are lobbying for. If enough people do that then they will lose.

Finally it is wrong to say that we are as bad off as China. Its an insult to the people there who are killed for their religious beliefs, the people who have to watch what they say for fear of being tortured or imprisoned, the people that don't have access to adequete health facilities for AIDs, or for mental health issues, not for lack of funds, but because the government turns a blind eye and says there isn't a problem. If someone in China dared to say something about their government along the lines of what you are saying about ours they could be killed.

No matter what things the RIAA or Microsoft has done it just doesn't compare with that, MS officials aren't trying to kill me for using Linux. I'm also not forced to buy their OS if I order my computer from a mom-and-pop shop or if I build it myself (some of the major vendors will let you order with just DOS installed for no charge). And as for music, I buy CDs that I like. I don't think the RIAA is right in trying to access my computer to find illegal material but last I checked no law has been passed that says they can, besides I have a firewall and I don't share music over P2P.

You have free speech and freedom of press and freedom to visit red-lobster's website. If you don't like a law then tell people about it, educate a group that will vote and vote for people of like mind, or run for office yourself.

Frankly I think that more people are worried about the economy and terrorists to pay much attention to computer bable right now.

offtopic but who cares I have karma to burn. Let me qualify this statement by saying that I do know and use PHP, its a part of my job. I'll also say that I know Perl and I think Perl is better so it probably makes me somewhat biased.

Name space, name space, name space. That's what's wrong with it. I get really tired of writing function names that_seem_to_go_on_forever(). I mean come on. What is the point of array_push() why can't it just be called 'push()'? I know it works on an array!

Interpolation. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't its sort of half done. I can't count how many times my PHP program has crashed because I dared to put a variable inside double quotes. The behavior appears to be almost random.

Everything feels hacked, this goes back to the namespace issue. There is no logical way to extend PHP so new functions are just thrown into the core language. Many times they act differently than other similar functions (sorry I can't think of an example off the top of my head). Its like some people decided they wanted 'x' function and just threw it in without regard to its implementation. Things don't seem to be reused just new things thrown in. Like why can't we have a standard set of database functions where the database type you are using is declared? Nope, instead we have a whole set of mysql_* functions for MySql and another whole set of pg_* functions for Postgre.

And finally everytime there is a new release there is some change to the core of the language. So they have to maintain cruft to be compatable and things don't break. If they would improve what they have instead of constantly adding new things this problem would go away.

Other annoyances (mostly my opinion): Three ways to read variables from a form but still hard to make a program that can accept GET or POST method with the same variable names.

(item1,item2,item3) is not treated as a list or an array. I can't do ($fieldname,$fieldname2) = mysql_fetch_row() ... nope I have to put them into a temporary array and set them one by one :(.

Regexes use functions ... this is extremely annoying and there are at least two (three?) different regex sets, plus functions that duplicate what regexes can do!

Global variables, again my opinion but I would rather declare my varibles local rather than having to declare them global. It wouldn't be so bad if I could declare my global variables once at the top of the program but no .. i have to redeclare them global in each function I'm going to use them in.

CPAN -- for all of Perl's faults it got CPAN right. PHP needs a standard way of adding modules to its installation (so they can be used system wide) and a good place to store them. You don't know how difficult it is to write a MIME complient message in PHP.

Finally I think PHP backwards... PHP is a language designed so that the data defines the program. Easy to slap together but difficult to maintain and very difficult to reuse code (I have to make tons of changes to the HTML page). I prefer to program so that my code defines my data. And I can give it new data to achieve new things or looks for a page or whatever ... PHP can do that its just not a simple to do as it is in other languages.

    My two cents :)

I'm conservative. I come from a little church family. I went to college on Stafford Loans (amoung others) and I was on unemployment for awhile.

I'm still conservative. I think we need some gov programs to help people stay on their feet but we do not need to fund poverty. I got my college education, now I'm paying it back. Should we not punish people who try to not pay back that debt or should we just say "Don't worry the rich conservative people will pay for it".

I was on unemployment for about 6 weeks all totaled. During that time I worked my butt off to find a job in order to repay what the government provided for me. I found a better and significantly higher paying job than the one that layed me off. The government will get its money back. Which is the point of unemployment, people get new jobs so they can continue to pay taxes and help the economy.

What it comes down to is individual choice. I couldn't chosen to sit on my butt and do nothing and get a free year of benefits. Sure they are supposed to check but they don't really look that hard, it wouldn't be difficult to look like you are trying to find work. What if I had chosen not to take stafford loans and get a good education. I would contribute back as much in tax money because I wouldn't have a high paying job.

My beef with many government programs is that we are too eager to hand out free passes to peoples bad choices. Want to have children and not be finacially stable? No problem welfare is there. Don't want to get a good education and get a good job. That's fine, the government can suppliment your income. Getting income from the government? Sure buy more cigarettes and alcohol instead of food for your family. There's more money where that came from.

I've been around extremely poor people. I volunteered in a homeless center for a while and one of my best friends came from a poor family. What happens when you just give them money? They run down to the convience store and buy more beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets while their children need better homes, clothing and education, still.

What happens when you give them food or a place to sleep (if they don't have a home). They come back for more food and more places to sleep.
The problem is there are very few programs that do little more than throw money at the problem. Education and job training are whats needed. And if they refuse that and just want a hand-out then I don't want my tax dollars to support that.

Some people can't help themselves and we should help them. Some people who can help themselves refuse to, and they don't need my money. Fund them enough to get them pointed in the right direction and then let them go. To me that's a more caring attitude because then they aren't co-dependant anymore. Co-dependancy on government programs perpetuates poverty.

Also the parent isn't berating your use of language rather your hypocritical attitude and your use of broad generaliaztions of what you think people you disagree with are like.

I'm tired of that same huge wide brush that gets painted over and over again, Republicans are for the rich, the corporations and right wing that want to remove abortion! Funny how top ranking Dems *cough*Al Gore*cough* and interestingly enough the Entertainment industry use that brush the most. Hmmm they don't have an agenda at all do they? Just out for the little guy ... sure.

Then when the citizens of this country (however dumb you may think they are) voted the Republicans into power, all the Dems got their panties in a tizy and Al Gore came on TV and cried how unfair it was. (Not that I'm saying the Republican's wouldn't have done the same).

The problem with politics in this country is that somewhere along the way the politians started putting Party before Country and People. Washington wonders why there is such division in the country. I say its because all the people who vote have a vested interest in one party or the other and no one else cares. If they want to see the apathy go away then both parties need to put the people back in power. Senators and Representatives need to stop listening to the special interest groups and educate themselves on the issues
