Okay he points out GodNet. Something that I've seen. I don't think he is attacking it. I think he's pointing it out.
Unfortunatly GodNet does exsist... I say unfortunatly because I have seen very very few good sites on it. Most of them distort Christianity into some kind of cult where people go to church just to judge everyone. That's why I'm creating Christianfreak.com to give some kind of hope that there might be some worth while sites out there.
So what is this guy saying? That there is a God? That there isn't? That he created everything and then just disappeared?
There is one important element that the author of this book seems to miss. God is a matter of faith and science is a matter of fact. Why would God have to conform to the laws of a science that he created? He doesn't. I agree that there is no scientific proof of God but I don't really think there has to be. I mean he's God. He want us humans to think for ourselves and have faith that he is there. That is when he shows himself, when we believe in him. I certainly wouldn't want to do anything for anyone if I had to prove that I exsist first, I think God must feel the same way.
I work at a uninversity that embraces any sort of propriatary software. They love MS exchange even though they spend several hours a day fixing it. It would be great if there were linux distros specifically for universities. It might break the cycle of propriatry-only attitudes.
However such a distrobution would have to be geared for people who don't know that much about linux. Including support for windows based modems (I huge problem I've had w/ linux) and easy to use graphical setup programs
Glad you know the alphabet! Too bad Bill really built his empire by bullying or buying out any compitition.
I guess it doesn't matter that nearly half the internet is run on an OPEN SOURCE server package. But hey I guess we could all close source our code and continue to have the blue screen of death an no internet connectivity to speak of.
BTW I get paid to write code too and I'm glad that someone can actually find the bugs and fix it and then allow me to include the fixes in the release without having to wait months and listen to denials that such bugs even exsist.

Why does it frustrate me so much to read a JK article? Probably because they are several pages of saying absolutely nothing with piles of bull thrown in just to keep us reading.
What is the DotCom era? Isn't an era something that consists of several decades if not hundreds or thousands of years?
Rennisance era : 1200AD - 1650AD
Neoclassic era : 1750 - 1900AD
DotCom era: 1996 - 2000?
Personally I think that Jon has bought into the the media hype that he so vigorously complains about... the media believes this is an era so does Jon. The media believes there is a recession, so does Jon. The media believes that the Internet has somehow transformed us into super humans or something... so does Jon.
I'm sorry but judging from the people I go to school with, lots of people have the internet but it just isn't that important in daily life. Some of my friends (God forbid) only check their email once a week! They couldn't care less if the internet dried up and blew away. Our culture simply isn't defined by it, and I have to agree with an above post that the idea that a hive of family photos and quasi-porn such as Geocities does not a community make.
People are entitled to their opinions but Jon use something besides your dizzying intellect to back it up!
Someone commented on here that Jon Katz is just a well written Perl Script, I tend to agree... Taco must have removed "Post Columbine" from his database.:)
Seriously though, I'm not even sure where this comes from. I've been reading through these last four articles and it seems to me that Katz is saying that the virtual world of the net is some how superior to the real world. This could not be further from the truth.
First of all, something that I don't think I've seen mentioned, is that no one on the Internet can ever truely be "known". Its impossible to really know a person unless you see them in real life situations. I don't think that's possible in IRC. Because of this it gives people a different personality online. Little dorky geeks from high school can all act real tough in chat rooms, why? Because there is no consequence for doing so other than being booted out in which case they go elsewhere because they aren't interested in community, they're interested in annoying people.
Things like coding communities work because the people in it have a common goal, but I think there would be a lot less bickering if people actually knew each other. Even when people don't like each other, when they are face to face they are usually somewhat tactful, and that's not true online.
I'm not really sure what Jon wants when it comes to a virtual community, I like the net the way it is, but if Jon wants people to be like they are in the real world, I don't think its possible.
Usually I haven't had any trouble just using X Configurator. (I use Mandrake 6.1) although i was installing a machine today that had correct drivers for my hardware but didn't work right off. After playing with some color resolution I got X to come up but widgets were not drawn correctly in the window manager and icons would dissappear and mouse pointers were becoming squares. Anyone else encounter such problems?
I worked as a camp counselor and as far as the kids go the parents just don't care enough about them to spend time with them and disapline them. They have the money to give them that pill.
Really sad if you ask me. No wonder we need more shrinks! We are giving kids a complex by giving them pills that label them "different" and "abnormal"
What shrink can define normal anyway? Its all a scam to make money.
I think the problem we're arguing here is whether we should ask religion or ask God and believe me there is a difference. I don't know whether God would want us to create life or not and I don't think I'm a qualified person to comment on that. But I personally feel that the scientists should ask him. I'm a devout follower of Christ, I go to church, but that doesn't mean that I believe all the so called "religious leaders" and cling to every word they say. Religion is bull. A relationship with God well that's something else. I think God cares more about the reasons we do things. And I'm glad that the scientists asked but to me its kind of tacking on someone else's opinion of God. Why not ask God himself?
You know what really ticks me off is the fact that people post stuff that they know nothing about. I've been reading this whole debate and I've only seen some half-way intellegent answers to anything. Mr. Anonymous Coward: you obviouly know what TV tells you about a Christian. Most of which just isn't true. Yes there are some whacked out people that go around playing "Christian" and judging people and they go around in groups. These people are close-minded, ignorant, stupid, and maybe even religious but they aren't Christian. IF you read the Bible you would find that Jesus Christ taught against judgement, he taught against doing what everyone else is doing and he taught against acting religious. Unfortunatly the only "Christians" that ever get any attention are the ones that do all of those things and the rest of us who are doing as God asks get blamed. So before you go accusing us of not thinking for ourselves try forming your own ideas about Christians by getting to know those of us who do actuallly love God rather than listening to your TV set.
