  1. What do you want to do after you graduate? on What Skills Should Undergrads Have? · · Score: 1

In my search for employment, I found that "well-established companies" (read: old) still had legacy hardware/software that they maintain and create software with that technology. Newer companies and companies that embrace change tend to work with newer technology like Java, Ruby, and C#. From my perspective, if I wanted to work for one of the "well-established companies" then I needed to learn Cobol and C. I chose to work for a company that has embraced changing technology and I will be working with Java (until the next "big" language hits).

  2. Start with the illegal on How Do You Find New Non-RIAA Music? · · Score: 1

I start by downloading stuff by less-than-legal means. I'm not in to pop music (I like death metal), and most of the time the downloading is sanctioned and the artists submit the music themselves. I hold on to the digital for as long as it takes me to decide if I actually like it (usually 3-5 days), and if I like it I make a note of it and try to find it as cheap as possible online or I pick up a copy when I see the band live. It's a win-win-win-win. I get to find bands/albums that I actually enjoy without paying out of pocket, I don't actually steal the music, the bands I enjoy will eventually make money because I like them, and I don't pay CD-store prices. Plus, I try to make it to shows and buy merchandise from bands that I really like. It's a well-known fact (or at least a popular myth) that bands make more money selling stuff at shows than they do in CD sales.

I think this guy has one (or ten) up on ole Stuie here. Maybe we should divert some presidential campaign funding to condom ads...

  4. I could see it... on For-Pay Demos Coming to Xbox Live? · · Score: 1

I would probably pay $2.50 for some demos, especially if they were extended demos (more maps/bosses/options/whatever). The idea of making the subscribers pay for it, however, is ridiculous. I would say that the content should be free to subscribers (with a code to enter, perhaps) and let everyone else download the stuff for $2.50 and not have the bathroom fodder that comes with the demos. That way, if you want the magazine, you get it AND the demos; if you don't want the magazine, you can still get the demos.

  5. The smart thing to do... on Which IT Careers Are Hot and Which are Not? · · Score: 1

The best field in the IT industry is in IP - intellectual property. Develop something amazing, or revolutionize a current development for whatever company you are at. Be the one person that knows how to fix it, do it better, etc. This is a good way to ensure that the company knows what you're worth. I have a friend that interned for a company that developed in C++. Interns were assigned the crappy and monotonous job of changing static values in header files. Tens of thousands of header files. Hundreds of values in each one. The same variables, changed to the same values. Instead of going to work and sifting through the files every day, my friend wrote a small, relatively simple Java program to search and replace variable values in the files. Instead of spending the entire summer working on this crappy job which usually took thousands of man hours to complete, they took two weeks to show the company something new, which did the same job literally over a single day. My friend was given an offer that was on the order of 20% higher than their average starting pay. Plus, they have some great job security since they're about the only person in the company that knows Java.

  6. Re:My responses to the Slate article. on 2006's Bill of Wrongs · · Score: 1

Specifically, this is about one line in #5. I find it laughable that the author calls PEAT a nonterrorist organization. If anyone does any research on PETA, you will find that PETA is a terrorist-funding organization.

    http://www.consumerfreedom.com/news_detail.cfm/hea dline/2339

This article talks about PETA giving a $70,000 "gift" to a suspected arsonist, $1500 to the radical Earth Liberation Front, $5000 to a militant member of the Animal Liberation Front, and have members advocating "blowing things up and smashing windows".

To say PETA is a nonterrorist organization is a complete fabrication of the truth.

  7. Bugs & Vulnerability on Is Vista the New OS/2? · · Score: 1

I am a strong supporter of Microsoft products (please don't behead me!) and I am going to wait at least until SP1 is released for Vista before I upgrade. In any new OS, there are too many bugs and vulnerabilities that are overlooked or otherwise not addressed. I would hate to upgrade to Vista and continue normal use (buying things online, etc.) only to find out 2 months later that there is a security hole and there may be hoards of hackers that now have my credit card number and username/password for websites that I visit frequently.

When XP was released, I waited until SP2 was released before I upgraded my OS. If you strongly feel that upgrading to Vista is that important, I won't be one to tell you not to do so, but that's because I'll let you and everyone else that upgrades find out what is wrong with Vista and give Microsoft a chance to fix it before I use it.
