  1. Think like a business... on PS3 Price Cut To Follow End of Blu-ray Laser Shortage? · · Score: 3, Interesting

People need to think like a business to understand Sony's pricing. Sony built a machine that is a game console, a Blu-ray player, DVD player, computer (with a far more powerful processor than most people's home computers), music player, communications/chat server, web browser and much more. It does all this but is nearly silent. It does a lot for the price and it has plenty of room to be extended in the future. People complain about the fact that there are no games because developers haven't figured out the best way to code for the cell processor--shouldn't that be a good sign that the console has a future and won't become obsolete by year end?

Sony also backs the player as a quality company--the chances of a system failure are low because Sony makes quality equipment. They are selling a brand, not just a device. That is worth a certain amount of money.

Price is not everything, believe it or not, when you are selling something. People pay for brand, quality, and the knowledge that if they buy from you they are getting a valuable product. I might save a couple of hundred bucks on a different console, but does that console match the specs I desire and does the brand support the product?

Sony is selling below production costs--what more could people want? If I sold my products under what I paid for them my company would fold within a few months. Sony is counting on long-term profit from game licensing, peripherals, and Playstation Store purchases, all of which are the consumers choice to buy or not to buy.

Quit complaining about price--the reason you complain is that you want one badly but don't have the cash to pony up and buy the device. The price is what the price is. Either you buy it or you don't. Do what I did--accept that you want the device, check your budget, save up (it took me eight months of small odd job income), buy it and enjoy the device. I've found that straight out of the box and with an internet connection the thing is a blast for my wife and I and my two children (3 and 5 years old). I also bought Oblivion and am totally sucked in. I'm looking forward to the games and functionality to come.

  2. Re:Now, why would I want a Wii? on How Wii Is Creaming the Competition · · Score: 1

My brother bought a PS3. He purchased a bag to carry it (slings easily over a shoulder). Spent a few bucks on an extra cable and brings over Motorstorm. It's a total blast at parties and everyone is yelling and cringing and talking about how amazing the sound and graphics and crashes are. Then he might put Lemmings on and everyone tries to help figure out the puzzles, again oo-ing and ah-ing over the graphics. He doesn't have to setup a sensor bar to make the controllers work properly.

    I think the 'fun-ness' of a system is more game-related than console-related.

  5. Another option for Sony on Sony Rejects PS3 Price Cuts · · Score: 0

Here's a solution: drop the price in the US by $300, but *raise* the price in Sweden by $300. The Swedish won't care because the PS3 is already the equivalent of $1000 USD and they aren't buying it anyway. The US people who want the PS3 more than everybody else will get what they want and everyone's happy. It's simple balance accounting. I've almost completed my application to my company's Finance department. This post will be icing on the cake.

People are too cynical about Flash/Silverlight/other technologies that make the web more entertaining. I've been frustrated with the web for a long time--it's boring. It's boring because the fun and cool-looking stuff is too difficult and time-consuming to place in your web pages, and once it's in the page you find out it's not widely supported and your users skip your site. We're limited by bandwidth too. But the crazy thing is we've had a couple dozen years to make it more interesting and yet I'm still coding pages with boring HTML and limited CSS to make sure everyone can view the site.

Look at the interfaces for gaming consoles like the PS3 and Wii--much more fun and interesting and audience-grabbing! Or look at TV advertisements and the NFL-style animations and statistics reporting graphics. People are getting this fun and engaging interface in their living rooms, and then they come to the web and it's a bunch of text and they get some limited animations and typically no sound effects. It's not fun.

We need to embrace these types of products that are trying to improve the fun of the web and try to make the web more exciting.
