Wrong! When I graduated, I had job offers from the public and the private sector. I choose the public because it meant working for the Department of Foreign Services and International Trade. Since I got hired I got to live & work in 2 countries and visit 20+ other on business trip. The salary is good and the benefits are not that bad. And I work only 40-hours/week and get compensatory time for my overtime. I don't know a lot of companies with coditions like these... I have friends at Nortel, JDS and Alcatel. They have much better pay but they work long hours in cubicule and don't get to see much outside their company. I do not regret my choice. I boils down with quality of life.
I wrote a little perl script that does just that, a bit rough but it works. It parses all the e-mail in my "spam" folder and then load the URLs refered to in the spam mails. Combined with cron, it is a pretty good tool. Script and details here: http://radio.weblogs.com/0111823/2003/11/16.html. Hopefully I won't be the only one to fight back...
A friend of mine has a very comprehensive Tintin site there: http://www.tintin.qc.ca/ . If you really want to get to know Tintin, this is the best place to see.
I must agree with Virtex on this. Cooling is extremely important. In my main disk box, I have 7 WD1200JB and they all have a slim fan mounted on their back to take away the heat. Keeping the drives cool isn't the only factor that will make a drive last, but it is a major one. I never had a HD fail on me (knock on wood). I still have the first 40Megs HD I bought in 1990, it is still working. And I keep the room where my machines are at 17C (68F). One of the main lessons I learned when I was doing my M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Atomic Physics was to keep the electronics cool. I remember how pecky my microwave amplifiers were...
When I was doing my undergraduate studies in physics, I was using a program called I.R.A.F. (http://iraf.noao.edu/iraf-homepage.html) to process large astrophysical images. This program doesn't support TIFF (yet) but if you can convert the file format, maybe you could use it to view/manipulate your image. You can download the program from the NOAO page for almost any UNIX flavour.
I bought last week an IBM 13Gb DJNA371350 and it was DOA. A bad sector 0. I could access data but it didn't boot after a format/s. However my dealer replaced it without questions. I also own a IBM 22Gb DJNA372200 and it is excellent!
Regarding mirroring, it is true that now that prices are low, it make sense. However, real tape back-up should never be neglected. I have a Seagate Hornet 20Gb to do **daily** incremental back-up. I always been a fan of Travan tape. They are cheap and reliable, I've been using them since 1993 and they saved my life quite often (Ever had a bad sector exactly where your Ph.D. thesis is?). Unfortunatelly, they're also quite noisy but I do back-up at night so nobody is annoyed by the noise. For my critical files I also do regular back-up on CD. That way I can sleep at night without worrying about the safety of my data.
Louis XIV also said "L'etat, c'est moi" (in English, "I am the State"). It easily shows how full of himself he was. I also liked your comment regarding the French. Although French is my first language, I'll never fully understand them. Cheers!

In which division of the Foreign Affairs are you? S branch? The intranet is all MS and ASP only, didn't you noticed? I maintain a part of it...
The new vTC of the T branch is all Apache, Oracle and JSP.

Maybe that could open the door to a dual-CPU notebook... Just dreaming...

Just my 2 cents...
