The Aphex track Vaz Deferenz from Donkey Rhubarb has images of sperm swimming along through the track. It's great because the sounds and images go together quite well, with the 'climax' of the track co-inciding with a swarm of sperm converging on an egg.
I imagine it would create a pseudo-animation effect if you used the Winamp voiceprint visualisaion.
At least that's how I remember it, I noticed it a few years ago when making a mix CD and I was editing the tracks in Cool Edit.
I seem to remember some penis shapes as well.... Well actually, they look more like arrows but they are pretty bloody Freudian.
Funny thing is, I remember hearing windowlicker and thinking - 'that sounds like Coagula' but I didn't think to look at it in a spectroscope app.
There are some sounds like that in one of the Come To Daddy remixes - anyone checked that out?

Aren't any/.ers even slightly conversant with Merzbow? Shit man, if Merzbow can't blow up your speakers, a pussy little square wave isn't going to. Actually, there is one person who might be able to fuck your speakers AND your CD player. JLIAT
He has dicovered that giving sounds a particular negative DC bias can actually crash CD players. The first time I've heard of any content EVER doing that. Please don't make me do bad ASCII art, just go to his site and check out his findings.
It's no suprise that the demo simulates a newsreader. Newsreaders on radio and TV have their own special mode of incflection. I'm sure you know what I mean, it's hard to describe, but it's very consistent between journalists.
So my point is, it's not perfect yet, but it will work pefectly for some applications.
Anyone remeber the automated DJ from the Simpsons? It was called DJ-3000 or something. "How about those bums in Congress"
I have a VCD version and it has sperm, tits, guts and incest (sort of) amongst other things. Somehow, I doubt this is going to make it into the US version. Anyone know for sure?

Many, many studies have been published about how much harder all caps text is to read than normal mixed case text.
This leads me to one of three conclusions: (1)Lawyers are not human. (2)Lawyers have no sense of style. (3)Lawyers intentionally make it hard to read.
Well duh! Ever heard of 'the small print'? Using ALL CAPS is part of the same strategy as using really small print. So that Joe Lunchpail says "too hard" and doesn't bother to read it.
For every billion dollars that Coke spends on advertising, the spend another billion on advertising research.
These corporate badboys have more than a passing understanding of human perceptual traits that makes it easier for them to influence us. You better believe it baby.
Yeah, "back in the day" one of the BBS's I had joined folded and they sold their membership database to a bulk mailer. The way I found out was that I started recieving all this junk mail - then AFTER that I got this slimy little apologetic letter.
The one that really made me paranoid was not computer related at all. I was on the mailing list for an 'alternative' mailorder bookstore that sold books of bomb recepies and zines about serial killers and all that other fun stuff. One day I recieved a letter that said they had been raided by the cops because they had a banned issue of Answer Me! and that the cops had taken a copy of the mailing list.
Sitting in front of me I have a VCD of the End of Evangelion movie. It cost me $10 Australian from a shop in town that sells Asian import VCDs. Unfortunately, it is subtitled in Chinese (I think). The original Japanese soundtrack is fantastic. With a bit of testing I have come to believe it is matrix encoded sourround sound (ie. Dolby ProLogic compatible). Very cool. I also suspect that this is the full uncut version as there is all sorts of sex and nudity and gore that I didn't see in the TV series when it was broadcast in Australia on SBS. Does anybody know if what I saw on SBS was cut? It wouldn't surprise me since it was the dubbed version.
A previous poster (HP LoveJet) said: They should make an auto-degrading movie of William Gibson's auto-degrading prose poem Agrippa (that will probably be just as bad and sell just as poorly)
I am totally in love with the idea of 'perfect' digital media being forced to rot. I'm sure some of you have heard of the 'disc rot' problem with some Laser Discs and CDs. This coating technology means I can produce time-based art. With some experimentation, you could tweak the error-correction of the DVD and get different effects and artifacts as the disc starts to die. I have always sought out the imperfections of digital media to make art from it. Now I will have a tool to take this idea even further.
This would also be popular with artists who wanted to make work available to fans that was 'ok' but that they feel wouldn't do them justice if it was a permanent record. Coil's Song of The Week Mp3 experiment would be a good example.
Releases in 1982 from worldwide combustion of 2800 million tons of coal totaled 3640 tons of uranium (containing 51,700 pounds of uranium-235) and 8960 tons of thorium
I only found this out recently from a chapter in one of Dr Karl Kruszelnicki's New Moments in Science books. And there's a whole lot of other nasty emissions besides. It makes nuclear power look safer than baby wipes in comparison.
This won't work for some companies who rely on having employees around for creative tasks, such as having the art staff work closely together
I disagree
There have been plenty of succesful creative collaborations over the internet - the most obvious example I can think of is the Resrocket Network Their music jamming client has now been integrated into pro audio software like CubaseVST
Of course universal broadband would make creative collaboration even better! (and more common)
Perhaps an exact quote from the book, matched up with the quotes from TDHOHH would enlighten us all
William Gibson - Idoru - Viking Australian paperback edition page 95 - (c) 1996 "If we could ever once stop talking about the music, and the industry and the politics of that, I think I'd probably tell you that it's easier to desire and pursue the attention of tens of millions of total strangers than it is to accept the love and the loyalty of those closest to us."
The Disposable Heroes of HipHoprisy - Music and Politics - Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury - (c) 1992 "If ever I would stop thinking about music and politics, I would tell you that sometimes it's easier to desire and pursue the attention and admiration of 100 strangers than it is to accept the love and loyalty of those closest to me"
In Idoru there is a passage where Rez says something that is exactly the same as the lyrics from 'Music and Politics' by The Disposable Heroes of HipHoprisy. Here is what is on the lyric sheet in front of me:
"...sometimes it's easier to desire and pursue the attention and admiration of 100 strangers than it is to accept the love and the loyalty of those closest to me"
sound familiar?
I can't remember if the following bit was in there as well:
"...I'm suffering from the worst type of loneliness. The loneliness of of being misunderstood, or more poignantly, the loneliness of being afraid to allow myself to be understood."
At any rate, I didn't see any mention or accreditation for Mike Franti or TDHOHH in the book.
Finally, I can tell my Tempest joke to some people who will get it: Have you heard about Tempest 2.0? No. Apparently my brain is no longer "Tempest certified" hehe

I agree that there are far too few comments. I thought Permutation City was probably his best. I would definitely reccomend reading Permutation City before starting on Diaspora because PC gets you used to the ideas involved in uploaded minds and. Diaspora starts there and goes so WAY beyond that! I live in Perth and Greg Egan has yet to show up as a GoH at our annual SF&F con (best in the country) Elitist geek bastard! Too good to hang out with the rest of us elitist geek bastards!
Why is it that minorities like goths and geeks go out of their way to exclude people/act superior?
