You are wrong on both numbers. You are simply repeating silly 'estimates' of ship numbers that were in a few news sites for the PS3. And the Wii didn't ship anywhere near 2 million units.

Best option is getting the $499 20gig model and buying a 100+ gig drive to upgrade the machine. The PS3 will partition the disk for you right from a menu and then you just follow the instructions they give you for the distro of your choice. People who just got their machines this morning already have things going and are posting pictures and results.

There is a full set of all the normal Linux dev tools that you get with any distro but there also is the Cell devkit - which you can get right now to check out although you won't be able to run anything of course.

    Of course it is silly.

There is one reason and one reason only that Sony has fewer PS3s ready for launch, they are about 1 month behind in their production of lasers for the system.

Second, the reason that Japan is getting relatively few systems on launch day compared to NA is Japan is very close to the PS3 manufacturing plants and there will be a steady stream of new PS3s every week - 100k according to Sony. Unlike the US and Europe where it is more important to get as many as possible for launch since subsequent supplies require either slow ship based shipments or fast but expensive air based shipments.

80 or 100k is probably the smallest amount Sony thought they could do for Japan in order to maximize the initial US launch shipment.

Having gone through many console launches, it is amazing to see how the vast majority of the PS3 FUD is almost word for word/cut n paste six year old PS2 FUD.

And we all know how that worked out six years ago...

Right about now is when all the pre-launch FUD starts to fade away as people get first hand experience with the console and the room for wild FUD claims goes away and the FUD turns to bitter, almost self pitying, posts and stories about how Sony is once again fooling gamers 'with teh Sony Hype and Lies' as Playstation console fly off the shelves.

The only thing that is really different this time for Sony is the bitterness is ramped up a notch. There is a decent number of people that have been praying for Sony to fail for a decade now. Dreamcast fans. Xbox fans. And now Xbox 360 fans. All looking yet again at Sony dominating another console generation(execept in Japan where it will probably be pretty close between the Wii and PS3).

Correct me if any of this is wrong...

I assume the Yellow Dog Linux system will be installed on each harddrive - along with a BluRay system disc for people who need/want to reinstall. I remember someone from Sony saying something along those lines last year.

Full set of PS3 devtools included with each PS3 for homebrew.

The PS3 has full support for USB keyboard and mouse and other standard input devices.

    The PS3 will be able to drive a standard monitor at 1080p - 1920 × 1080 rez.

Don't know if there will be two different boot options - or perhaps they will be using some of the OS virtualization stuff Cell supports.

Online gaming will be free - only MMORPGs will be charging.

There will be an online movie/music store.

You will be able to buy/download PS1/PS2 to your PS3 harddrive and play them.

You will be able to buy/download PSP games to your PS3 harddrive and play them on your PSP.

There is stuff where you will be able to stream content wirelessly from your PS3 to your PSP.

1080p games - the list of 1080p native PS3 games seems to keep growing everyday - I think there are about six just for launch and about 10 - 15 I've read about.

    1080p BluRay movies

HDMI connector on both versions of the PS3

Full backwards compatibility with PS1 games through software emulation.

Full backwards compatibility with PS2 games through hardware emulation - PS2 chips in every PS3.

You can replace the harddrive with any laptop drive.

Keep hearing about DLNA compliance and people being excited about that - not sure why yet

All that for 499 in the US. Wow.

Also I remember talk of future PS3 versions with more RAM or multiple Cell chips are something Sony is planning. I would die for a dual or quad Cell based system with a couple gigs of RAM running Linux for my desktop.

    http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_conte nt&task=view&id=3978&Itemid=2

The 360 has sold less units in its first year compared to the first Xbox.

And all of this during a time where their only competition was the six year old PS2 that has been beating the 360 almost every single month this year.

There was talk of Microsoft using profits from the 360 to fund the Zune going up against Apple, but the massive 360 losses keep getting pushed out into the future. Right now best case scenario is 2008. Although the massive money they must be spending on fixing the huge numbers of defective 360s for free will certainly push that date ever more.

Microsoft talked of having 10 million 360s in consumer hands by the end of 2006, but right now they have only sold 3.4 million worldwide. ~2.4 in NA, 0.14 in Japan, and 1 million in Europe.

And the Wii and PS3 are one month from hitting the shelves. It is hard to imagine that 360 sales will pick up when faced with the two biggest names in console gaming arriving in the market with their new consoles.
