  1. I think you missed the point entirely on PC "Lemon Law" Bill Introduced In Pennsylvania · · Score: 1
Lemon laws are generally aimed at whole classes of products which are defective? there should be a lemon law for EVERYTHING! How many times have you bought something only to find out it dose't work as advertised / broke in a few weeks?

This law is designed to make it MORE expensive to sell a pc with poor components then to sell one with decent components, by requiring companies to support what they sell ... remember, freedom comes with responsibility. I've been burned on several premade pcs because they just used sub standard parts, even name brands like NEC (before they were bought by pack bell!)

  2. Re:Only the Line Speed is Guaranteed on Houston DSL users File Lawsuit Against SBC · · Score: 2
Read carefully my friend "...and other factors that cannot be controlled by SBC Companies..."

If they intentionally slowed down service then these factors can obviously be controlled by SBC and are not subject to that agreement.

  3. M$ Strategy on Microsoft Porting Applications To Linux (Really!) · · Score: 1
I don't really believe this ... but if it were true:

1: This could be their "vaporware strategy."

2: Any bridge from linux to windows they create will work both ways and they know it.

3: This may be the "embrace" portion of the embrace/extend/extinguish cycle ....

4: This is probably a ploy to manipulate the DOJ trial and the EU commission investigating them -- they don't even need to produce anything tangible -- just claim they are

  4. FBI & Universeities on University to Review Carnivore · · Score: 1

I trust universities about as much as I trust the FBI. Whatever university they choose will give carnivore a yellow dog review. At most they might point out a few minor flaws to make it look like an earnest attempt.

  5. A change would do you good... on Overcomming Programmer's Block? · · Score: 1

Your probably suffering from an advanced case of "i really hate my job and I'm still in denial" ... writing code all day? whats your passion? I plow about half my paycheck every month into recording gear cuz thats my passion :)

  6. Adolescent software developers ... on The Open Windows Project · · Score: 2

When you were younger, did ya ever gather your friends and plan to build a big tree house, convince everyone you could do it, and never get to it? You know that videogame you're always gonna write? That symphony? Your novel? ... this is the same thing, ain't gonna happen :) A bunch of people got really excited about this idea, put up a webpage, and tried to ignore that little voice in the back of their head called common sense.

  7. Intellectual Socialism on Against Intellectual Property · · Score: 1

This is nothing more then that. Granted the patent and copyright is abused wholesale by corporations, but corporations are by definition evil and abusive, what can you expect? What really bothers me, is the implication that I can't own my own work. I'm a musician, I write music, and its my soul on the manuscript paper...social relevance and standards don't apply, its my soul, I own it, end of story. If they WANT to fix the copyright / patent system, make patents / copyrights non transferable, and make patents / copyrights easy to contest, so abuses like patenting genes, can't happen.

  8. not an issue -- 3d Rendering on New ASUS Drivers Help Cheaters? · · Score: 1

I've done some 3d programming in my day, and this will just force programmers to use polygon obfuscation algorithims to not send this information to the video drivers at all. In the end, this will be a zero escalation.

  9. Bad idea on Mouse That Scans Your Fingerprints · · Score: 2

I work for a lab which does biometric research for sony and the company who microsoft recently licensced fingerprint technology from (I can't recall their name right!)... This thing is bunk :) Theres no way their false accept number is as high as 10^9, reasonable error rates are around 10^3, which is of course scary to rely on as a security device. Why? Because your fingers usually have enough dirt in them to screw up the image even when they LOOK clean, the finger plate collects grease, and most finger scanners have a sweet spot due to the small size of their CCDs. I think anytime you rely on one identification modality, your asking for trouble.

  10. Box vs on Software Packaging And The Environment? · · Score: 1

The problem with boxes is; as you increase their dimensions the surface area avaliable for misleading advertising grows rather slowly. What is needed is a hologram on the back so the software makers can misrepresent their software in multiple visual-planes. Jokes aside, people feel offended spending a fortune for a cd they know costs less then a dollar to produce. Most of the software in the store is the Britany Spears of software ... looks good, great package, but ultimatley does and is nothing. Reach for that steely dan album!

  11. Question for the creator! on Ask John Carmack About Quake - or Anything Else · · Score: 1

What considerations go into choosing the music for your games, and can my band submit a demo?
