    Sun has a general hostility towards linux -- so this is really no surprise at all. I do business with them on a fairly regular basis during the day, and the salesmen / techs are always going out of their way to pick on linux.

    Sun see's linux as a threat -- and this is why -- sun can't beat linux's price / performance ratio. Sure, Suns make better large end servers -- but the market is MOSTLY low to medium. And by that I mean, businessess who won't be ruined if their systems crash for a few hours. And theres always BSD

    The biggest problem at my place of employment is instead of working on technical issues -- i get subverted teaching people stupid stuff -- how to use outlook -- how to make a powerpoint presentation -- how to get latex to distill a file ... after awhile it becomes easier for the staff to ask me a question and have me show them -- then to pickup a fucking book to learn something ... whats more insulting is my bad management, which has expressly forbade anyone in my lab from going to FREE training courses given by the university, which is ludicrous, because now they're paying me to teach these people while out internal network is going to hell, what they could be learning for free.

    Anyone whose read an economics book would know that a market economy would simply not allow a 1000$ consumer OS. If it did cost 1000$ people would find replacement products -- stick with old os's, pirate, use be, linux, bsd, hell, you can get a ultrasparc10 with solaris 7 for 2000$

    MS knows this ... but when has MS payed attention to mathmatical law, let alone any kind of law?

    I was wondering when the shit was gonna hit the fan -- AOL has had their hands in way too many pies -- way too many pies they aren't profiting from directly -- ICQ (cost em ~$200M), AIM(who knows how much it costs), WinAmp (cost about ~$80M) ... money for nothing and yer software for free

    is that the fights often last less then 1 minute! With three fights, that gets us up to a signal to noise ratio of 1 minute of show for every 10 minutes of commercials / stupid announcers. Even if the fights lasted the whole 3 minutes, we're talking about 3 to 10 (fights to bullshit ratio). I'll sit here and immagine a cool robot fight and get alot more satisfaction out of it :)

    Its simple -- amazon licensces "1-click" (which is unpatentable) ... probably on a handshake or less -- to apple -- because it lends credability to amazon's rediculous pattent. In return for this, apple isn't exposed to liability (via lawsuit), and both amazon and apple recieve media attention (your reading about it right now!). Apple gets their cubes hyped, amazon gets their pattent hyped. No lawsuits, everyone is happy.

    If I wanted to licensce 1-click ? My ass would be bleeding I'm sure

    You can be an ok programmer without college, but a great one? never ... because no "Self taught" programmer can teach himself finite math or the complex field of algorithim analysis or design -- and that is where academia excells -- in in depth courses on such things from people who have been studying it since before you were born.

    Where it fails is all the bullshit you have to wade thru to get to the 3 or 4 classes that really are truely usefull :)

    What really bothers me is the "victim" attitude the cuecat people seem to have. Somehow they feel its their right to profit from their business. Guess what? -- business is fraught with risk. I can think of atleast 10 problems with their business model, all of which I'm sure they understood when they decided to do this. The real question here is why couldn't all these "smart" business men come up with a better business in the first place?

    BTW, I ordered 3 cuecats from their website, and am using them to catalog equiptment and data tapes. A much better idea then being a corporate marketing tool.

    am I mistaken -- or does the worldforge website have a web bug on it? My adzapper proxy is refusing to display the web page in its entirity (sp?), saying only "1x1 transparent GIF" ... If I'm wrong -- I appologize -- If I'm right -- is user tracking a principle that an open source project should support? Food for thought ....
