  1. if usenet.com takes down stuff on Usenet.com May Find Safe Harbor From RIAA lawsuit · · Score: 1, Interesting

So, if I post something using another provider that a music label asks usenet.com to takedown and usenet.com does it, won't people leave them because they are taking down stuff that I post and move to another nntp provider? But won't usenet.com go out of business because they will lose customers?

  2. users on Is A Bad Attitude Damaging The IT Profession? · · Score: 0

I work in systems of my college's library and it so happened that one of the network printers got a new IP address which of course made all the systems set up to use this printer, not be able to use it. Upon explaining the problem, I was stopped about half-way and was asked "why does it do it?" (get a new IP address). I explained the basics of DHCP and dynamic IP addresses, but to me, the question was more like "why do electrons have a negative charge?" There are also people (librarians and students) that for some reason do not want to drop their usage of floppy discs ... even after being told that flash drives are more convenient and offer much more storage per physical space (not to mention not being as prone to corruption in presence of magnets). How is IT supposed to deal with people that don't understand (and have no motivation to understand) why 2+2=4?

  4. Maybe it's not just the wifi card makers. on The Problem With Driver-Loaded Firmware · · Score: 1, Informative

I bought a Compaq Presario V2000Z laptop. As I found out the hard way, this laptop has a whitelist of wifi cards that it will boot up with in the BIOS. Before I found out about the lock, I spent 20USD on a Ralink based card. But before I actually bought the card, I asked an HP tech if there is such a lock, I received a negative answer. Sometimes, you can't vote with your money, even if you want to.

I have read that it is possible to edit the BIOS (decompress, edit the proper bytes in proper places, compress back and flash), the problem arises with flashing, it just doesn't want to do it. A work around I found is if I keep the system in the grub menu and switch out the card, I can still use the card in Linux, the problem is that this is a workaround and not a real solution.

With MS there is no FM.

When I was first messing around with FreeBSD (before I tried linux) XChat would not even connect to IRC because I was running as root. Needless to say, during the FreeBSD install process, I was told (at least once) that I should not be using the system day-to-day as root. Does Windows give a jack to tell you such things? doubt it.

Here's a warning: don't use Microsoft products. Microsoft products are intented for the braindead ... much like the wireless router that you buy in a store, which works great out of the box, except that it does that with NO security in mind. With Microsoft's products you have to be smart in order to secure it, with many others, you have to be smart to use it and by the time you are smart enough to use it, you know a thing or two about security.
