You bet it's really stupid! I just had a post rejected because I couldn't even read what the "hidden" text was! I tried and failed 3 times and then the submit button disappeared. Perhaps I should train a neural network to figure out the letters for me as I can't do it myself...
You're right that the initial idea is always different after seeing prototypes. But for this exact reason you shouldn't document your code. Code should be disposable, so don't waste time writing other than what the computer needs.
If you're thinking "oh my god, how can you do without documentation?!"... Well, instead of calling your class A and writing in the documentation "This is a class to represent animals", why don't you name your class Animal instead? Same for methods... Don't be afraid to use very long method names that clearly explain what they do. Don't feel like typing long names? Just use short ones and refactor it when you're done. Eclipse has really good refactoring features...
Are you 100% sure about that alcohol thing? It says in the manuals not to do that... I'd like to get my games to play again, so if you're sure there's no harm, I might try it...
I like AppleWorks. It does look a bit odd, but it came free with my machine, it's stable and gets the job done without any hassles. I heard the next version's gonna use the right GUI APIs.
As an example... at no time during the book The Bourne Supremacy, is Marie killed
I've seen both The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy movies. I also read The Bourne Identity afterwards. I was really disappointed by the book. I find over half the book is more a love story than anything else. I was gonna get the 2nd book, hoping Marie was killed very early, like in the movie, and we could move on with the interesting stuff... I guess I'll just get the 3rd movie if it ever comes out and forget about the books then.
Let the user create a "spreadsheet" with sample data from a web page. The browser then learns the pattern to extract the samples and extracts the rest of the page.
item# | title | price | time left 1234 | IBM T20 | 250 | 2 days 2345 | Sony Vaio | 300 | 3 days ...
I must admit it would be a limited-use technology to add to a browser, but the research aspect is interesting and putting it in Firefox would be your proof of concept.
A problem would be to determine how many samples are enough for the user to get what he wants. I'd set up the interface as the user's spreadsheet taking 10% of the height under the web page and the resulting extraction (updated live) taking 40-50% of the browser's width. The user could then easily see if the results are good or not.
Negative examples might be an idea too, to "fix" computer mistakes.
Are you sure it's unacceptable that tar archives are breakable? The way I see it, you'll tar your files then bzip them and finally put them on a backup server/CD/DVD. The bzip layer will provide the auto-repairing features, I don't see how it could break between having the tar and bzipping it. Is this for a normal environment? If your harddrive breaks during or after creating the tar, then the bzip would fail, no? Please tell us more about your situation if not.
Can good workers get over the stigma of an employer's reputation? How will working at SCO affect its staff's careers? Does anyone at SCO talk about this?
One employee did talk about it, but quickly went bankrupt after SCO forced him to get his Linux licenses for his home computer.
I haven't seen a computer from which I couldn't access Hotmail from the web. Outlook Express also supports Hotmail accounts directly, so you can easily move and copy emails around between your own machine and Hotmail. I find it works very well.
Also, Hotmail can fetch email from other POP accounts for you, so you can then access your email from all your accounts from everywhere!
The idea is that anyone can use paper and will be comfortable with it.

At the same time they release Longhorn, if we're lucky.
You should read about XP (extreme programming)...

Sounds interesting, I'd like to read more about your setup. Did you put up a web page on the subject?

The original FF was a great game, no doubts about it. But I fail to see how it could affect one's life... Please elaborate.

Hey man, just curious... Do you write prolog for your job? I like Prolog, but erm... it isn't used much.
I opened that "LA to Oregon" movie that was posted on Slashdot a while ago and tried this:
tell application "QuickTime Player"
activate
play movie "LA to Oregon (95x).avi"
enter full screen "LA to Oregon (95x).avi"
end tell
AppleScript complains "LA to Oregon (95x).avi" doesn't understand the "enter full screen" message. How'd you do it?
I put "graduated from Carleton University" on mine and the phone won't stop ringing! ;-)
(for those who don't know, Carleton and Ottawa U are "competing" universities in Ottawa)
I dont care, linux is getting better every day :)
What would you say about other operating systems?

AssetRelay carries good second-hand microscopes. So you can get good stuff for cheaper. See their microscopes page: AssetRelay's Microscopes
I second that! Even though the interface is horrible at first, it's very addictive once you get into it.

I didn't know ants were encrypting their pheromone! ;-)
Dad?!?! I didn't know you read slashdot, sorry! I'll shovel and do the dishes for the next month! :-)
Who is Norah Jones? What kind of a hitter is that singer if noone ever heard of him/her?
I would rotate it 90 degrees clock-wise. That way, the 'L' stands for "loser" and the extra dot represents hackers' malformation.
Otherwise, great idea.
That's why people get better tools, such as Eclipse.
