How about one of those pictures of webs made by spiders dosed up on drugs(heroin, speed, alcohol, caffeine etc) ie a tangled incomplete mess? I think that this would perfectly symbolize the relevancy of Linux to 'high-end graphics' professionals..........I look forward to the ranting of Linux bigots with no experience whatsoever of profesional graphics work.(More enlightened Linux advocates may simply take this post as a humorous dig at those who champion GIMP et al without ever having used commercial alternatives:).

It rather depends on how you define better. The qualities that I look for in a browser are speed, stability, and low resource usage in order to work alongside other software. Therefore from my point of view IE is inadequate as it is dog slow and quickly starves other programs that I run of the memory and processor cycles that they require. You may disagree with my describing IE as slow but try running an Amiga browser through UAE and compare the speed! I'm not suggesting you should use this set-up as it's a bit silly but it does show what a bloated waste of resources IE really is.

Regardless of how much scorn you heap on the G3s Bytemark performance the fact is that in general application performance (that is, realworld programs as opposed to arbitrary benchmarking programs) the G3 is noticeably faster than a pentium of the same clock speed. How relevant to the software you use everyday is SpecInt/FP?

If you were to use Photogenics you would find its approach leads you to work in quite a different way from Photoshop, whether or not it is the tool for you is entirely a matter for you to decide, but many have found it indespensable. I think you should give it a try at least.

"In the long run users would be far better off sending a $100 donation to the GIMP developers than paying this guy's lunch, no matter how well written is his software." How would users be better off not only using inferior software but even paying the developers for it? In the long run those users who pay Paul's lunch will have been reaping the rewards of having used the most productive of the two apps, while the donaters to the 'GIMP developers retirement fund' have been waiting for those developers to consider implementing their requests. Of course they will be able to console themselves with the thought that they are contributing to "an inherently stronger model for the creation, distribution and development of new ideas". Me? I'd swap attempted moral superiority for quality software every time.

"Let's face it, how many of us are willing to shell out $99 for whatever difference exists between this and the Gimp?" The fact that you are unwilling to pay that $99 without knowing what those differences are, clearly shows you as one of those "if it's not free it can't be good" Linux bigots that those of us in the real world love to laugh at.
