That may be operating procdure, but in my state (KY) EVERY time I see a state cop, s/he's traveling 10-20 mph over the speed limit. There isn't that much dangerous crime in KY, I'm sorry to say.
Often, when state troopers blow past me, I speed up and match their speed. I've followed them for up to an hour before, no lights, no pullover, no tailing someone else, nothing (a few times, just going home-once, even with his lights on (!) ).
If ever a cop tickets my for that, I'll ask him for his ticket book as soon as he gets done, and return the favor.
You are right that American public schools scuk. But you are wrong about why. It has nothing to do with technology. It has everything to do with society.
As most of us here are well aware, children who strive to excell as educaton, and learning in general are ridiculed and hated by classmates and teachers. That is the problem. American society is more focused on Basketball, and MTV than on real education. Even in college (just graduated, BS CS. WOOHOO!), I met teaching majors who were more concerned with the quarterback than with learning. They thought I was a little out of touch, because I don't even know who played in last year's superbowl, but can do multivariable calculus. AND THESE WERE TEACHERS!!!
Comming from a poor out of the way mining comunity, I've seen education both with, and without technology-it makes no difference. But when teachers, the very people whose responsibility it is to educate children don't even get intersted in education, what else can you expect? In all my time as a student (before college) I found only one teacher who was genuinely interested in education. ONE, in 12 years. And thank god I did too! I will be forever indebted to her for what she did.
Want to see a change in American education? Change the teachers. Get smarter teachers. Get teachers who have a passion for learning, and who have taken a personal stake in education. Don't blame technology.
Ya know, I realized this quite a while back. TV and movies are all passive forms of content distribution. All you do is sit there, and get bombarded with sights and sounds; you don't have to do anything. The producers tell you what to think, and how to feel, and all you have to do is sit there, passively, and obey. That's why I got rid of my TV.
Books on the other hand, are active forms of content distribution (Radio too, to some extent). When you read, you aren't bombarded with anything. You have to work to get at the content. It requires you to think, and use your imagination. And it enables you to think and feel what you want to think and feel, based on what and who you are.
I even find that I am more entertianed, and more informed by books, magazines, newspapers (online and off) than by the evening news, and the regular sitcoms. Better still, my chosen form of media, because it causes me to HAVE to think, exercises my brain- possibly the most important thing I can ever do.
"...most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd, because on the whole it wasnt't the small greem pieces of paper that were unhappy.
And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digigal watches.
...And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change..."
Yes, we are crazy. As Arthur Dent once said, "I think I'll go mad now".
(I just read all 5 books and the short story in the trilogy last week....)
You mean it can get more annoying than that stupid monkey? no wait. Mail.com uses pop up ads. I have to close them just to see my email. I HATE POPUP ads! Well anyway, I don't think it can get any worse than the popup ads. Second to that is the monkey.
Actually, since Slashdot is at slashdot.ORG, and not.com or.net, it is not "confusingly similar".
Now if you registered slashdotsucks.org, Cmdr Taco would be all over you with his crack suicide legal team.
Entertainment yes, but does it really HAVE to be as mindless as Wrestling?
-oh wait. So is the majority of the country. Nevermind. I'll just go read a book.
Of services Available. And Up front pricing. -I mean Mechanics offer them, what's the difference (Wetware vs. Metalware, but its still repair services and tech support right?)
>Any company that doesn't use/recycle/retrain those old skills is shooting itself in the balance sheet.
I would like to think that this were so. But its not. I'm from one of those "coal mining towns" -ok actually, its a coal mining hole-in-the-map (Eastern KY, to be honest). What I see here, is that we have an abundance of workers, but no work. For you economic buffs, that means the market is saturated, wages are low, and the people get raped (The land too...).
It doesn't hurt the mining companies one bit to simply use up its workers by driving them like dogs, for slaves wages, and then hiring a new batch when that batch is finished off (for extra credit, do research on what is commonly referred to as 'scrip'). There is always someone willing to work-and for lower wages too. So what does it matter to a mining company to simply install a bunch of robots, and fire 9/10 of their workers? The owners still get their money, and the people still get raped.
Ok, I'll get off the soap box now.

IIRC, It was 7 years before the next manned launch. OK, it didn't destroy it, but it did slow us down a bit.

Sorry you feel so cold about it. (Perhaps you were asleep or something?) I was in third grade. I thought it was a joke at first. I couldn't believe it. I mean it just BLEW UP! My jaw hit the floor, and so did my heart. That was a very sad day for me indeed. I don't remember that day for any "Where were you?" games. I remember it because of how I felt about what happened. That was a significant day in my life.
You sir, are making sense to me. I hate installing linux. It takes HOURS. I just want to pop in a CD, click next a few times, and get a working OS that I can install the software of my choice on later. And I don't really care much about sed, awk, or zsh (great tools, but If I don't use them, why do they have to be installed)-so don't ask me. Just install the basic system, with X-maybe, and none of the extra stuff. I'll pick and choose by myself later.

Well, Lary Wall is, in fact, off his rocker, but we all knew that...

proximitron. cool. thanx.
I always close them immediately. I don't think I've ever seen a popup ad load completely.
Don't give them any ideas! I have enough trouble as it is.

Weird! I never knew anyone registered that. Oh well. The point of the joke I hope wasn't completely lost though was it?
