I looked at the 3 big ones, alfresco, KM and Nuxeo, and like the latter best. For one, their full version == their GPL version. So if you want to do it all yourself, you will get all the features.
Secondly, I found the interface nice and simple.
Thirdly, they have this option where you can open a document from your browser, edit it and save it back into the DM system directly. (That requires a plugin for your browser & office). They used to have an openoffice version of that plugin too. Very sweet.
There might even be a LUG:-) Once you hit the local scene (which you can start working on remotely) you will find there is so much to do, you might consider staying.

Next step would definitly be online banking, as in, not tied to a mobile operator, using (much cheaper) IP than mobile connections, and if the banks can finally get serious, proper banks running it.

The biggest success story so far is called M-Pesa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-Pesa in Kenya. But more and more providers offer these services. A company called Zain http://www.zain.com/ now offers international mobile transfers within their network.
