As one of the comments to TFA notes, one problem with the studies reviewed is that the trials may not have been long enough to detect differences. They were mostly 6 week trials, with a few shorter and a few longer. That may not be long enough to pick up a significant difference. The effects for some can peak between 6-8 weeks. At my (state) university, the Graduate Student Organization (GSO) recently unionized us. They have obtained dental benefits for us. In addition, as our employment as TAs and RAs superceded our student status and would have prevented us from having free access to the new recreation facility, it was nice that the union fought for that as well. I am somewhat uncomfortable as a Grad student being part of this, mainly due to the threatened preferential hiring practices and substantial fee for joining (we don't get paid a whole heck of lot). However, given the University's occasional profit-centered mentality, it's nice to have someone stand up for you.
