  1. Re:Again, no... YOU RTFA and RTFL. on The $54 Million Laptop · · Score: 1

The problem comes in, though, is if the laptop was at the BB store or if it was sent to an off-site location for repairs. Geek Squad has to send any laptop with a hardware problem or any computer with a heavy virus infection to an off-site repair center. If the laptop was being sent off-site, then the question is: Was the laptop lost at the off-site loc, or was it lost in-route to the off-site loc? If the answer is the latter, then BB is not at fault, but the shipping company that was transporting the laptop is. However, if the laptop was at the BB store when it was lost, it also begs the question: was the laptop just simply lost, or was it stolen? If it was stolen, then BB is also a victim, and the thief needs to be found and charged. Either way, the truth of the situation needs to be discovered.

    Heres what I say.

Let the consoles have the simple puzzle games and games with poor gameplay, replay value, and otherwise simplicity. In the meantime, give PCs the hardcore games that require complexity (Mass Effect, KoToR, NWN series, Company of Heroes, C&C, the like.) That way, PC gaming will live on for the hard-core gamer, and those people who want games that they will be tired of after the first 6 hours can go to consoles and stop clogging up the PC market with poor quality, no replay value games (Timeshift comes to mind).

I can understand your animosity, but not all Vista installs are bad. I have found that Vista Ultimate tends to do better than the Home editions. It could be said that Vista Home Premium/Basic could be analogous to XP Home, which every1 knows is absolute junk. However, I will admit that Vista definitely needs some work before it will be widely used in offices and corporations, but of course there will be those corps whose CTOs will demand that they have the newest stuff so they force their computers over to Vista without testing first (I hate my IT dept., [bracing for IT dept. attack]).

    I agree with you.
IMHO, M$ should do a verification, but only once, such as when the OS is doing its first update. When that happens, you need to run WGA just ONCE, and when it says that your OS is ok, it then should put a heavily encrypted file that is deemed by the OS to be a file that cannot be copied. Then when ever M$ needs to do verification during updates or the like, it can see that the file is there, and that this OS is ok. This, of course, is just a simplified version, but it should be doable.

Alright, thats it. Shut it the both of you. Can we stop acting like a bunch of bickering bureaucrats? Now with that out of the way, I say that both have some good ideas, but I have to support Obama. Fact is, we have to consider what kind of influence Bill will have over Hillary if she gets elected. In a way, it her election could become an indirect way for Bill to get back into office (abet indirectly). I think what we need is a president that is a relatively fresh face, one who does not have parents or family that were presidents or similar. And Obama's openness is something I think we could all use (instead of the never ending 'black ops'). The main reason I won't support Clinton, though, is that she was for the bills against violent video games (I can't remember where, but I think she also said at one point in time that violent video games should be banned outright) Thats it for my short rant (preps for flames, trolls, et al.)

  6. Re:Company Computers and NDA's?? on US Courts Consider Legality of Laptop Inspection · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have to agree with you on this in terms of US Customs. But, personally, I think that in the end, US Customs will be baned from searching laptops that are owned by a corporation.

    My reasoning:

If customs starts searching corporate laptops, they naturally will be able to view data that the corporation will most likely want to keep secret. Additionally, in some cases, the corporate agent will have to reveal the password and encryption key for the laptop and data, which would let the customs agent know what kind and what pattern of security the corporation uses. Finally, the delays caused by the searching of the data on the laptop could cause problems for the corporate agent.

In the end, the corporation will get ticked of and try and get their lobbyists to make it so that searches of that nature cannot be done to corporations. After all, its the corporations that usually provide the campaign funds for the various government offices, so what the corporations want, the corporations get.

In my freshman year of college, I had to take a Python programming class. The text book was so bad that the majority of the students could figure out how to even start to program in Python. The instructor, though, never even opened the student edition and went by the teacher edition only, which only told the professor what labs went with which chapters and gave some lecture notes, but was otherwise useless. In the end, I did ok in the class, but only because I went to a web site (can't remember what site though) that showed how to program in Python. Most of the other students failed.
