Priority inversion is never caused by the OS, only by the interrupt/task priority design. So VxWorks shouldn't be blamed here.
Yes, but it is WindRiver's fault.
The default configuration of all semaphores within 5.x VxWorks modules is to be 'simple'. In order to change these initialization values, you had either hunt through symbol tables and assembly code dumps or put a gun to the head of some poor slob in Windriver tech support.
To have a non-inversion safe objects inside a network stack is simply stupid design.
Have you ever heard of the glock? it's not exactly made of any metalic content
You sir, are an ignorant fool. The Glock 17 (the so-called plastic gun the media had a fit over back in the 80's) had over a pound of steel in it. There is, nor has there ever been, no such thing as a plastic gun. Ceramic, maybe but that is highly unlikely.
Too bad they didn't put some real entrepeneurs in charge of that division
You obviously have never worked for Intel.
The only "entrepeneurs" inside Intel are the ones who made a real business from scratch and were devoured by the Borg. They won't be ready to run a division until the implants are completely set.
As most conservatives are quick to point out, the K-12 education system is under local, not federal, control. So it's hard to see how you can blame the breakage on the federal DoE.
What percentage of local schools budgets are derived from DoE funding? Do you have any idea what strings are attached to said funds? And what, pray tell, do you think is the impact of the DoE on the educational standards in college curricula that are used to train local school teachers and administrators?
The DoE and their ilk are a plague on the education of our children.
The conservatives in the US are horrified at the k-12 educational system.
So are the (intelligent) liberals. The difference is that the conservatives want to give up on public education (via vouchers) while the liberals want to fix it.
(Note that I am a liberal and an environmentalist, but let's face facts, summertime sucks hardcore in the south.;-)
So move.
Americans have the choice to live pretty much wherever they want to. If you don't like the power bill to run the AC, move to somewhere else where you don't need AC.
Then you can bitch about heating oil prices in the winter instead...
I don't think that taking fingerprints is all bad. It is mostly used with criminals, that is true. OTOH fingerprints also are really unique and practically impossible to falsificate, so if they were used more widely, your personal documents (like ID and like) could not be used that easily by someone else. Someone could do your signature with a little training.
With the digital storage of fingerprints, any falsification not only is possible, but very feasable.
Consider this: They do not store the actual fingerprint image, they store the relative position of the interesting features of the print.
The party line is that Intel is an OS agnostic. If supporting Linux/BSD with Open Source will help sell more hardware, then that is what they will do. Like this and this.
Clearcase is pretty good and Visual Source Safe works well on Win32. I think CVS is superior because it is more cross platform and *flexible* about what you can do with it. I like being able to migrate development over various platforms because you never know when Win32 will suddenly cease to be viable or Linux will pale next to Solaris for some high-performance server side code [hey, it could happen]...
And if you want something superior to CVS, but without the financial hemmorage that is ClearCase, get Perforce
From an artist's persective, patronage of the wealthy is better, for the obvious reason that they have more money.
Not hardly. 200 million people each with a dollar have more economic power that any one individual could ever have.
Larry Ellison can probably find more money in his sofa than I have in my bank account, so artists will obviously benifit more from winning his enthusiasm than mine.
How much of "The Rich's" net worth is liquid? I would submit that the majority of the wealth at the top end is tied up in real estate and stocks, not cash. The masses have loads of liquid cash, and they spend it on entertainment at an astounding rate.
to the fases of the coding process before the actual code-writing. If you spend enough time designing (as in specifications, etc) before coding you can get pretty close to flawless code....
This isn't true. For example the error described in PGP was because of incorrect use of read(2), not because of improper design.
Incorrect use of read(2) is a design flaw. If you do not understand the usage of a sub-function, how can you make a proper design around it?
I'm still studing in local university and I hate when all these "systems designers" tell me that design is all that matters - you may use trained chimps to type in your code after good design phase. I surely cannot agree with this. (Although, I agree that good design does not harm you.)
Incorrect or invalid design assumptions will always harm your code.
Design is everything. With a good design, even trained chimps can type your code.
For one thing, there are already something like 50 million legally privately owned firearms in the US today, and heaven knows how many illegal ones.
Fifty million?
Try nearly Two Hundred Forty Million. There are between Sixty-Five and Eighty Million (as of 1994 in previous link) legal gun owners in the USA. Nearly four million firearms were sold in 1995 alone.
Yes.
Real Time != Real Fast

What a day to not have mod points.
Perforce is *the* SCM tool.

Sell your motorcycles!
BLASPHEMY!
Sell the table first...

There are always new authors ready to step into the limelight. One just needs to look for them.
I get my fix here.
Goodbye Mr. Anderson, you will be missed - but your works will live on forever.

It wouldn't need fixing at all if "intelligent liberals" hadn't broken it to begin with.
North Carolina is "First in Fish"?
When compared to Alaska? Or Kodiak Island even? Methinks there are some fish tales being told here.
Please spend some quality time with a nuclear physics book. Nuclear Power plants don't go *BOOM* - the core melts into the ground.
Of course a *BOOM* would probably be preferable.
Fourth?
It was my understanding that the first packet was sent from Berkley to the U of U.
That would make it the second node on 'the net'
Many use an ARM7 core ASIC. Not exactly a powerhouse, but more than enough for the job at hand.
Who needs a car that can go 180mph when you have a motorcycle that can go 190mph?
;-)

UPnP has several IETF drafts, and SLP does not cover the Auto-IP solved problem.
I do like the fact that SSDP utilizes XML to encode the service data, this makes it extremely flexible.

260 people over twenty years.
I fear it was not as well. Analog has been around for over 70 years and is, IMNSHO, the best SF mag available today.
Fifty million?

The math is left as an exercise for the reader.
