I'm completely uncertain of the whether or not any of the following is true but: I was once told that Apple technicians would not fix your Apple product if they smelt ciggarette smoke as they did not want to expose the technicians to "third hand" smoke. To smoke around the product would void the warranty. IMO, I believe that Apple would void the warranty under those conditions quite willingly, whether or not they actually do, I'm not sure, and I'm pretty certain "third hand" smoke can't really be that bad, if it even has any effect at all.

  2. Smoking seriously harms you and others around you on Bill Gates Says Anti-Vaccine Effort Kills Children · · Score: 2

Not having your children vaccinated not only leaves your child open to disease, but then they can pass the disease onto others. Not vaccinating seriously harms you and others around you. Therefore, not vaccinating is equivalent to giving your child ciggarettes. QED.

Slashdot has previously posted about the decline of NoSQL. It was a nice idea, and some stuff was learnt from it, but it's not really any better than an SQL system which has been tried and tested with over 20 years of experience. There's a reason Google uses an SQL backend.

I always thought that there are many other ways we can help the poorer nations than giving them technology. With $100 you could almost feed a village for a year, so why waste that sum on a laptop? But now I see the laptop idea could actually work in solving poverty if the people are going to be paid to create havoc..... Obviously though, they're going to need an internet connection which is either going to be very difficult or very expensive in the poorer areas of Africa

  12. People on The War Is Over, and Linux Has Won · · Score: 1
"The desktop is the major war."
When I'm talking to people about Linux, they still think it's a really complex system that only businesses can use. One person asked me if you still have to manually configure each piece of hardware before it will work. Whilst Linux is still far from winning the desktop, it is gaining exposure. People can become more aware of it and learn of its advantages. Once I've converted people to Linux, they feel they need Windows still for the first couple of weeks because the way it works is different, but they soon find out that the way it works is better and there is no way they will go back. All that needs to happen for Linux to win the desktop is for people to be informed. Unfortunately, especially in the UK, I can't comment on other countries as I'm not sure, but schools and colleges all seem to be using Windows. DiDA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiDA) for example, I think is sponsored by Macromedia. All the work they do is in Flash or Dreamweaver. Rather conveniently, Macromedia offer cut price copies of these software packages to students on this course. You have not won the war until you have won the people.
