LOL.. is this a troll? I'll bite. Let's see.. FireFox has had a few bad security flaws recently (most had patches release the SAME DAY), is not integrated with the OS (this is a GOOD thing from a security standpoint) and offers MUCH greater functionality (www.mozdev.org). IE offers LESS functionality, is like swiss cheese when it comes to vulnerabilities and you have to wait until Microsoft decides to release a patch once a hole is discoverd. Of course IE is "compatible" with more sites (as long as you don't consider RFC compliance or if the site adheres to any internet standards).
Now "only" 9 out of every 10 systems uses IE. Hopefully FireFox will continue to grow and IE will continue to shrink.. of course that will be tough when Microsoft copies all of Firefox's features in the next release of IE.
Shame on Google! They do great things and add alot to the community.. They run the servers on Linux, why is it that they don't write clients for ALL of their tools (googlebar, web accelerator, etc) in Linux as well as Windows? Just a rant.. but an accurate one!
Personally, I DON'T care what someone else uses for an OS or an Office Suite or Web-Browser.. I do care if they "standardize" me out of my choices though!
Currently, too many people are Lemmings and just follow what they are told. However, if they see that other options exist (and many of them are BETTER), then they will be happier.
Of course, if we just sit back, Microsoft WILL continue to push it's products down the Lemmings throats (via Monopoly, Advertising and whatever other technique is needed). If one company "wins", then capitalism, freedom, competition and innovation lose. When was the last time Microsoft came up with a technology of it's own? (Microsoft Bob!?)
I'd expect that a company whose main server farm runs on Linux would also release Linux versions of it's tools.. i.e. googlebar and picasa. (I know you can get googlebar from mozdev.org, but no picasa).
I thought IBM was "embracing" Linux? Come on folks let's get an opensource client written. Or lets create our own version of this software and use the CPU cycles to help technology.
Word Perfect (Practically put out of business by a monopoly that copied the technology)
Netscape (Ditto)
Real Networks (Ditto)
Lotus (Ditto)
MAC (Ditto)
IBM's OS2 (Ditto)
SUN (Ditto)
And who would the Monopoly be?
America needs to refocus on rewarding the innovators, not simply the immitators that have superior marketing skills. The thing that has made America the greatest in technology is innovation, not market share.
Is it not true that they use Suns to compile windows itself? Because they need the huge multiprocessor power of a real computer (130+ cpu's)? What about (noso)hotmail? There are still BSD systems running there. I guess the article is only talking about workstations?
Aside from the encouragement to add Information Assurance curriculums to major colleges, this document says nothing. Somehow they even think the "BSA" is related to computer security.. ha ha ha.
Now that I've heard that the application was possibly part of the problem, I can't help but think of the large number of barely literate Windows "programmers" that are out there. What was the application written in? VB?.Net? My kids can write code with VB (it's just not GOOD code). Let's get some geeky grey haired UNIX programmer to do the job and do it right!
Let's see.. what has Open Source contributed to innovation? TCP/IP, the Internet, DNS, email, newsgroups, networked operating systems, user and system security... and many many more (including revision control and process).
Microsoft wouldn't know innovation if it bit them in the nose. Bill Gates famous line "this whole internet thing is a fad" is one example.. The quote "Microsoft argues that open source freezes innovation" - is a joke.
Put simply, one of the greatest problems facing the USA this decade has been the fact that we are rewarding the "duplicator" (Microsoft) more than the true "innovators".
Name ONE innovation Microsoft has introduced...
The OS.. NO (UNIX.. even DOS was stolen) The windowing system.. NO (Amiga/Xerox/Apple) Microsoft "Bob".. YES! Multi-platform/Network based programming language.. NO (Sun Java) The Webbrowser.. NO (Mozilla/Lynx/Netscape) Streaming media?.. NO (Real Networks) The office suite.. NO (Lotus/Word Perfect/etc) The virus..YES! The worm.. YES! Networking.. NO TCP/IP.. NO NetBUI.. YES! (yikes!) Stability and Security.. NO The BSOD.. YES! Obscurity.. YES!
hrmm.. not much innovation there... I hope most people realize the emperor has no clothes when it comes to Microsoft speaking about innovation.
As far as money from Open Source.. well, the internet is the single greatest new market this decade.
Well, one group tried to use technology to forge bogus documents and the other used technology to debunk the BS. Nice to see technology revealing the truth. It's also refreshing to see so many Slashdotters who are not foaming at the mouth Liberals that believe everything the media tells them!

Linux for me, Mac for wife/kids,,,
Since when is it that the 2/3+ of the American population who claims to be Christian is a "handfull"?
Come on Yahoo.. Where is the spine? Well, google still gets my business!
Yes, I agree. But that is in no way thanks to Microsoft.
Supports Windows NT/XP/2K/Pocket PC. Now that's interoperability! NOT!
It's like C# being multiplatform... multiple windows platforms...
Yeah.. the peace loving N. Korean govt. If they want, we can show them just how hostile we can be (toward unstable, immoral, communist countries)
I'd expect that a company whose main server farm runs on Linux would also release Linux versions of it's tools.. i.e. googlebar and picasa. (I know you can get googlebar from mozdev.org, but no picasa).
Would it be hard?

If not.. then they can monitor you no matter where you are in the mud.

*Laugh* Okay, A WORM (singular) and some viruses (that affected only a single user at a time) existed. The rest is completely true..

Respect is earned. Since 451 is neither accurate nor quality, it deserves no respect. What a joke, "Respect" for 451... Ha Ha Ha.
Well, I'm going to be one less customer if they only allow the closed option. (I suspect that many others will do the same)
If they use SSL (https), just think how useful it would be to those of us that get blocked by corporate firewalls (from using non http/https ports).
Much better! Thanks alot for the answers! (I'm no budda, but I'm now audiophile either).
