    Well obviously you need cryptographic protection involved when addressing hardware, otherwise everyone would be making drivers for it. You don't want people to go & run linux on it and have actual good performance.

    Yeah, these things have more processing powder than most pc's from a while back.

    The smart devices have their on board cache, often multiple layers of caching, like in the case of an ssd a cache in ram caching a cache in very fast flash caching the main flash. Some of these also have super caps on board to provide that second of power to flush at least the ram cache.
