  1. FUD not against OV Team, but against others on Ogg Vorbis Update: Thomson Trouble · · Score: 2
Thompson isn't going to sue the Ogg Vorbis people. They'll sue (or threaten to sue) anyone of significance that decides to use the technology.

For example, Thompson (RCA) was going to sell a TiVo box at RadioShack this Xmas season. They cancelled production when Gemstar threatened to cut off ties with Thompson because Gemstar is suing TiVo over a patent for putting a TV schedule in a grid. (I am not making this up. http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=13657926 )

Lawsuits and Patents are corporate weapons, not about justice.

Are you 18 or over and a US citizen? Then register to vote!

Politicians pay attention to demographics. If a lot of college kids vote in this year's election, they'll care more about your causes. It doesn't even matter who you vote for (except to you), so VOTE!

  4. For MacHack, the IE team did asteroids in DHTML on Game Development in Mozilla · · Score: 1
For one of their hacks submitted at the MacHack contest, the Mac IE team wrote asteroids in DHTML. Seems like they're a little ahead. :-)

Seriously though, it's a good kick in the pants for people who didn't realize that a LOT of work is being done to make it possible to wite complete applications that load via the web.

They didn't make it easy to find this info last time I checked, but I recall that the refresh rate seemed too slow for anything video.

  6. No Mac Client, No Source to Port on Distributed.net Does CSC · · Score: 1
Here I sit, working late on Mac OS X, with a G4/400, a handful of G3s, and a 9500/180mp (dual 604e), and no client to run.

I've lost track of the number of nights I've pondered porting the RC5 client to Mac OS X, or AltiVec (er, "velocity engine"). But there is no source for the RC5 clients, so my machines get rebooted to Mac OS 8.6 every night when I go home to crunch RC5 at about 1300kk/s ea.

    Sorta sad.

(BTW- don't tell me to email them to get on the porting team. I want to putz with it when I have 5 minutes. I don't want to have to join a group.)

Glad you had a fun time. Not to depreciate your experience any (I'm sure it was incredibly valuable to you), but it was way more valuable for Loki. From your description, you guys did about $500,000 worth of consulting for them, for the cost of Pizza and a single hotel room for all of you to share.

10 years from now, you'll look back on this and snicker what a great deal Loki got. (Again, this doesn't diminish the value of what you got out of it.)
