They do this so you can remove the power supply to outside the building when it starts smoking and melting inside the printer. It also makes it easier to fix the problem and replace the power supply, if you can find someone who sells them.

This may be offtopic, but this sort of behavior by Lexmark is just one more reason not to buy their junk...

Just look to google to see the best reason...

We've had 6 out of 6 power supplies in Lexmark Inkjets at the company I work at begin to smoke within anywhere from 6 months to a year of purchase (Lexmark Z65's too, not quite a disposable printer at $200+/pop). Luckily we discovered the problem before they caught fire.

  4. Re:Already have been doing this on Federal Reserve To Use Internet For Money Transfer · · Score: 2, Insightful

I work for a small community bank, and we use both the old FedLine for DOS system as well as the new FedLine for the Web. Currently, the Fedline/Web has a decent amount of the features of the old DOS system, but is still lacking certain ones that the Fed has refused to do over the internet for some time due to security.

The DOS based system uses a 19.2k modem connection back to the Fed, and the data is encrypted using a Jones Futurex hardware encryption board. Security is rather tight, requiring both a local username and a remote username, and there are strict requirements on what features each user can use (no one user can do to much).

The new FL/Web uses HTTPS, with a 128-bit encryption requirement, and client SSL certificates to determine and confirm (to a limited extent, since the certificate can be copied) a user's identity and what features they should have access to. The Fed's instructions for installing the certificate state that a user should set high security which requires that they enter a user chosen (read: weak) password, and re-enter it every time to use the certificate. I've witnessed several users both bypass that setting altogether or just check the "Save Password" box the first time they have to put the password in, so obviously this isn't preventing any access. They also recommend that the certificate be exported to a floppy (labeled "Bob Smith FedLine Certificate") with the same weak password used to secure the certificate on the PC in case it is lost. To access a large portion of FL/Web, all that is required is the client certificate. Certain features do require an additional password. Obviously there are still a few flaws in this security design.

this post has flamebate written all over it.
apparently this person is not too familiar with windows or else they would not publicly call it "stable" or "secure". especially among slashdot readers. the only funny thing about the post is how clueless the writer is.

  6. MTV on MTV Hacker Saga Gets Worse · · Score: 1

MTV has been a terrible channel ever since they stopped doing what the original goal was, to play music. I hope that everyone realizes how terrible of a channel MTV is these days and stops watching it. If everyone continues to watch MTV, even though it sucks then everything will continue going the way it is and it'll get even worse(if that is possible). If it took this latest "True Life" special about hacking to make you all realize that kind of shit MTV puts on the air, then something is wrong.. real wrong. MTV will put anything on the air that will draw more people to watching them, without even checking out anything on that show to see if it is *true*. Look at shows like the Real World and Road Rules, do you think any of the shit that happens on there is what REALLY happens? do you think that is all that happens on there, or are there times when everything is fine that they cut out so the viewers don't get bored watching their shit? if everyone keeps giving attention to MTV in ANY FORM, MTV will continue getting worse. I hope one of these days MTV will be back to its original format, music and just music!
