unfortunately they would have no problem with that when you realize that 'feds should pay' mean they are spending taxpayer's money on it.

It's too bad that no VM tool seems to support OS X as a guest. I'm sure it must be possible.

I agree. OSX is a pain to get going on virtual machines as much as I try. I've tried VMWare and VirtualBox. Does anyone know if Parallels is any better? Seeing as they have all that OSX experience.

Maybe if you'd RTFA you'd see that only solar cars were excluded from the grand prize (all other fuels were ok including LP, H2, fuel cells, etc) and for a good reason. From the contest rules...

Shell Eco-marathon Americas Grand Prize - $10,000 Awarded to the educational institution or University in honor of the team who completes the farthest distance with the least amount of fuel. Because solar cars do not use "fuel" and the solar energy that is used is limitless and cannot be converted into an equivalent measure to compare to other engine types, solar cars are not eligible for the Grand Prize award. Enough with the Slashdot corporate whining already.

Except thats EXACTLY what they did... made the entire world think the US was in a arms race with China now. Even Conservative members of our government think this was a stupid move since it basically created a pissing match with China who now know our capabilities instead of having to guess at them. Except the entire world has known we could do this since 1985.

This was all a dickwaving scheme by the military who not too long ago was up in arms over China doing the EXACT same thing but being upfront about it being a test and not using a falling sat as a scheme to show off. People were pissed at China for shooting it in high orbit where the debris would cause problems. Most of usa193 will re-enter in 48 hours, with the remainder in 40 days. Big difference there. A satellite is falling, we may as well test a missile system on it. We already proved we could do it over two decades ago anyways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solwind_P78-1

It also depends what body of water you are on. Typically only the oceans will = ~0, Lakes, rivers, ponds, etc all have their own 'level'. For example even Lake Superior is nominally 602 ft above sea level and GPS would report you at 602 ft, relative to its zero datum the ocean's sea level.

How will the iPhone motivate carriers to offer 3G phones in the US sooner, when the iPhone itself doesn't even have a 3G radio? As far as radios/speed is concerned the iPhone is competing with phones from 5 years ago.

This isn't the cold war anymore - most of our subs probably operate loud and proud most of the time. Regardless if this is the Cold War or not, there is no way our subs are broadcasting their position. We wouldn't be spending millions to develop anechoic coatings and other sound controlling materials for these boats just so we can tell the world where we are. In addition, IIRC, sub patrol routes to this day are not known to anyone except the captain in the sub. They are given a very general patrol patrol area and cruise it as they see fit.
