  1. Re:Permatemps on How Socially Responsible Are Computer Companies? · · Score: 1
&gt&nbspThat doesn't leave much to live on.

Two years ago, when I was making under $7.50/hour as a barrista (and knowing my friends that still do in Seattle) and had a good time living the lifestyle, I think I would have been offended by that statement--

On the other hand, now that I'm walking away from a contract position @ Microsoft for a better job at a startup... I wouldn't take less than that, that's for sure...

Sad. I feel like I've lost something. Is this what they mean by "Rat Race"? =-

  2. In AK, it's H.B. 239 on Lobbying Against UCITA: A Practical Guide · · Score: 1
And it was discussed approved by the House Labor and Commerce Committee on Jan 9th, 2000. Taken directly from the Minutes of the Committee Meeting:

*** Any substantive amendments to the bill will be strongly opposed by the Alaska Commissioners to the National Commissioners Conference on National State Laws, who, by the way, are the drafters of the Uniform Code.

Sharon Young, State Recorder, is happy with the bill except for a technical change that is promised by Murkowski's office to be addressed in a blank CS to the Judiciary Committee.

Mary Ellen Beardsly, AG's office, said she went through it and the Department supports it.

Basically, everyone was pleased with this bill. They did not understand each and every component, but enough so that we know it is not going to "do harm".

    Next stop: Judiciary!

I thought that "Mostly Harmless" stopped being funny around the time of "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish."

    Cheers~

  3. Just as there has always been a satanic rock star on Copy Protection - Scapegoat or Real Threat? · · Score: 1

... The RIAA will scream about losing money to recordings. They screamed about the Audio Cassette, back in the day. They stopped DAT technology cold in its tracks. They screamed about VHS/Beta tapes, but never got behind laser disks. They yelled and hollered about CD-R's too. At least they didn't have anything to do with stopping the Mini-disk(R) technology. Sony did that all on their own.

  4. Re:High bandwidth internet access!! on On Keeping Geeks in a Metropolitan Area · · Score: 1
Bandwith is key for me... I just moved into a new apartment in the Seattle Metro area, and the complex is newly remodled and wired with fiber direct to an ISP (Reflex Communications) so for $44/month I get a 1 Mb always-on connection (256Kb guaranteed)... it's getting installed next week! And I took the cheap package--for a few bucks more you get static IP's, 512Kb or 1 Mb guaranteed, etc... and they are working on VoIP technology too...

Given my electronic leash (read: cell phone/pager combo...), I'm thinking about ignoring U.S. Worst^H^H^H^H^HWest altogether. Their DSL support is horrible, and their customer service is worse.

Also being just blocks from jazz, reggae, and punk/industrial clubs means something to do if I ever get bored with working 70+ hour work weeks... *sigh*

    Cheers~

  5. Yahoo isn't the only one... Try M$NBC on Yahoo Censoring Their Message Boards? · · Score: 1
Just a few weeks ago, I learned from a car-pool mate who is a board-op for M$NBC that they have the same policy... if they don't like the comment for whatever reason, they have complete editorial control over the posts to protect themselves... there was a very long discussion on the way home regarding what kind of sensitive material was restricted.

I feel confident in my mate's abilities and intelegence, but what about the others that they work with? I didn't get the impression that there were written guidelines, that's for sure...
