Android phones aren't battery hogs because of their high clock speed...it's mostly a combination of poor battery design by hardware companies and the inherent way Android functions. Newer Android phones (and the 2.3 version of the OS itself) are supposed to have enhanced battery life quite noticeably. That being said, switching my data connection from 3G to WiFi when possible usually extends my battery life by a solid 2-4 hours, depending on usage.

While the crap battery life on my Eris does kind of suck, I'm more or less always right next to a wall socket, so it doesn't bother me all that much.

Apple has typically released next-gen iPhones in June. If you have the patience, I'd say wait. Generally, there's little to gain when only jumping a single generation, especially when the newest version is closer to reality than the release date of the "current" version is in the past.

If nothing else, I'd say at least wait until they reveal the specs and make your decision from there.

First, a good reason to NOT be dual core is battery life - slower is better. iPhone hardware has always lagged the Android models - the original iPhone and iPhone 3G had 412MHz CPUs, while the G1 (same year) had a 524MHz CPU - nearly 25% faster. The iPhone 3GS sported a 624MHz CPU or so (50% faster than iPhone/iPhone 3G), at a time when the Android hotness was 1GHz CPUs (50% faster than iPhone 3GS). The iPhone 4 is supposed to have around an 800MHz CPU, and current gen Androids have 1.2GHz CPUs

Just for clarification, the clock speeds you cited are the downclocked speeds, not the "design spec" clock speeds. Look under "Processor" on this chart. Not saying you're wrong, just saying the performance is purposely reduced from its actual potential for extra battery life.

Same way my wife feels about her second-gen iPod Touch. She's going to get an iphone 4 when they come to Verizon next month, so technically that will replace the Touch, but she's been quite happy with it. Granted, it can't play some of the newer games (Infinity Blade being a good example), but it still gets used quite a bit (although, at this point in its life, it functions mainly as a Netflix streamer/Plants vs Zombies player. It will be further demoted to a "music-only" device when it gets permanently docked at my desk at work, when she gets her iPhone.)

Hell, I'm still rocking a Rio Carbon as my main MP3 player :)

  13. Re:Grumpy old man time on Covert Video of Apple IPad 2 Just Released · · Score: 1

I think the rapidly decreasing time between product generations (with the exception of gaming consoles...that's an entirely different conversation though) comes down to a few, simple reasons:

    1. The technology snowball is getting huge, and as such its speed is increasing (i.e. better technology allows you to make even better technology with less effort...look at the technological difference between 100-1000 AD, 1001-1799 AD, 1800-1950, and 1950-2011.)

    2. Money, money, money. As gadgets and various doodads become less for dorks and more for the general public, the market increases. A larger market generally means more people that are likely to be manipulated via marketing, and thus people can be convinced a minor improvement is larger than it really is.

    3. The need to always be "cutting edge", which is a big part of Apple's image. If they went an entire year without refreshing any of their products, Apple fans would lose their collective shit. Whether it be for status purposes or legitimate gadget lust, the end result would be the same.

From the time my wife has spent with our neighbor's iPad during our normal weekend movie marathon, it seems best suited (for home use, anyway) when sitting on the couch. She finds the tablet form factor easier to wield than a laptop when staying stationary for long periods of time. Then again, her as-yet unending obsession with Plants vs Zombies may have something to do with that.

I'm more of a traditional laptop guy myself, but I can see the appeal. That being said, the only reasons I could see in choosing the iPad over a different tablet is the battery life and if you're already locked into iTunes...other than that, the differences between it and other offerings are negligible.

I know it's not the same thing, but this sorta reminds me of that TNG episode where two planets were suffering from a plague, and the cure was on one planet...but the cure was also a narcotic. One planet cured themselves of the addiction, but kept selling it to the other planet under the false pretense they would die if they didn't continue consuming it (their symptoms were withdrawal, not plague death.) I love how at the end of it, Piccard is like "Let's get as far away from this system as we can. Screw these loonies, let them duke it out." Can't remember the name of the episode, but I know it was in the first season.
