No, the invasion wasn't idiotic. Germany thought they could defeat France, bomb the UK into submission, then turn the entire German military east and defeat the Soviets. And the all most did. Moscow was the city to far, just like Market Garden in '44, Moscow was just a little ways too far away. Then the snows and winter came, and the Soviet spies in Japan found out the Japanese wouldn't attack, so that freed up resources.

Germany couldn't have invaded the UK, they didn't have the sealift that was needed, Sealion was just a plan, it never got past that stage. Had Germany thrown all the resources they used on Russia against the UK with aviation and naval power, they probably have made a peace or could have gotten the UK to ally against a Soviet Union that would have dominated Finland and looked south towards Persia and British India further on in the 1940s.

In a multi-cultural world, we can't say that a nation has to be a republic or democracy to be "civilized". Yes, China is authoritarian, but that doesn't remove their culture or civilization.

Most of the nations on that list do have elections, usually free elections, although there are times when things aren't as free as one would hope, like Iran and Afghanistan this year. On that list, the only surprise for me was Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Why would removing a defensive system make the Russians feel safer? The BMD can't deal with a saturated strike like the Russians are capable of delivering, it wasn't going to be part of a integrated air defense network, if the Russians wanted to take out Eastern Europe, they could have cruise missiles the BMD sits from the Tu-22 and Tu-26, then struck Poland and whomever.

Same goes for the US parts of it, they are good for small arsenals (DPRK, Iran), OK for medium arsenals (PRC) and poor for large arsenals (Russia, France, UK). So why exactly is a defensive system a bad thing?

As for Russian short-range nuclear missile deployment, well they still have a truck load of ICBMs and air launched cruise missiles than can hit any "Old" European capital in 15 minutes.
