  1. I'll have to go ahead and disagree... on LED Forty Years Older Than Thought · · Score: 0

The government has an immense hand in any system of "free market." The government creates and maintains the structure that the market operates in. The very corporation itself is an invention of the government, and such notions as limited liability, private property rights, patents, contract law, and copyrights are paper tigers without heavy-handed government enforcement. Capitalism developed right alongside, and only with persistent and generous assistance from, the modern nation-state (the Enclosure Acts come first to mind). There has never been a clear-cut division between politics and economics and there never will be, nomatter how much "free-market" rhetoric is imbibed. And now back to our regularly scheduled post of a completely different topic, already in progress.

You had me agreeing with you up until the point where you claimed that being a Caucasian male is a disadvantage in today's society. A person is not the sum of his/her scholarships. It's also about the kind of socialization you get and the neighborhood and school system you're born into, and how much income your parent(s) make(s) and what those in authority around you tell you you're capable of.

Let's drop the racism, shall we? We should fight the real enemy -- those at the top of the economic ladder -- instead of those around us who are also trying to scrape by. Otherwise we're just more crabs in a bucket.

So, since I've seen a person who has seen one of these prototypes in real life, and now you have read it on slashdot, it is basically confirmed :-)

You certainly have a keen grasp of the average Slashdotter's evidentiary requirements!

as Tom Brokaw immediately came to mind when I heard the news. There are audio bits on Dana Carvey's website, and occasionally someone will upload the entire skit to YouTube (before it's inevitably taken down by the copyright police).

Tom Brokaw: Gerald Ford dead today at the age of 83.
Producer: Good, now one for next year.
Tom Brokaw: Gerald Ford dead today at age 84.
Producer: Now one for if he's shot.
Tom Brokaw: Gerald Ford shot dead today at age 83.
    Producer: Add the word senseless.
Tom Brokaw: Okay, Gerald Ford shot dead at the senseless age of 83.
    ...
Tom Brokaw: Alright, we got it?
Producer: No. We've got "eaten by wolves".
Tom Brokaw: What? Now, come on!
    Producer: Just read it!
Tom Brokaw: Gerald Ford isn't gonna be eaten by wolves!
    Producer: Taft was.
    Tom Brokaw: Really? Taft?
    Producer: Uh... yeah.
