Then you have labor cost to make around 2,000 units a day. And parts that are getting more expensive. Having the building to keep operational... It all adds up If they could do 1 million it may be more justifiable.

We seem to forget that Organizations/Governments (especially large ones) do a lot of things with many different motives and sometimes they will do things that contradict itself. Because so much is going on there are many units running independent with each other, thus causing such confusion. Rarely do we have the Evil Corporation but sub units in such corporation doing bad things, while others are doing wonderful things. Granted such companies should have ways to stop the bad things from happening, and more often than not they will turn a blind eye, or reward them for hacking their metrics for success, encouraging such bad behavior. But for most of these things, there isn't Mr. Evil running everything with a devious purpose, but a bunch of people who are for the most part good, having to cut a corner or compromise to keep their jobs then it all adds up.

But still for a news summary the numbers do not help bring the point across. We see an article saying "Fastest Street Legal Electric Car" we want to know either Miles per Hour or Kilometers per Hour. As those are the standard unit for Land based human movement. As our walk rate is between 2-4 MPH, our Jog is 4-6, run 6-12 and sprint 12+. The neat thing about units is it allows us to understand them in aspects of other things we do in the same units.

Trek has been in a steady decline for a while.

    The successes in the list.
Wrath of Kahn - Allowed a nostalgic response to an existing story, added with the character development of an older Kirk trying to retire.
The Voyage Home - Wasn't a Star Trek movie, but a Romance Comedy with Star Trek Characters.
The Undiscovered country - once again playing on the older Kirk who was to retire.
First Contact - While popular at the time, I don't feel it will hold up. However that was more of an action flick than star trek.
    For the shows.
TNG in essence ignored the TOS for most of the plots and created a show independant.
The same with DS9 very different.
